Rolling Stones drop new song under a different name – Hearing it isn’t easy

The Rolling Stones have had an enduring impact on music. They were major competitors to The Beatles in the 1960s, helped define rock music throughout the 1970s, and have continued to thrive for decades while many other bands have lost their spark. They show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The Rolling Stones have released a new song called “Rough and Twisted,” but it’s not available on typical streaming services. And it’s not credited to The Rolling Stones – it’s released under the name The Cockroaches instead.

The new single came out on Saturday, April 11th, and is only available on vinyl. People in London might have noticed posters with a QR code recently – scanning it offered a sneak peek of the song by the band, The Cockroaches. There was also a T-shirt available with the question, “Who the heck are The Cockroaches?”

Rolling Stones release new single as the Cockroaches

Dedicated Rolling Stones fans will recall the band occasionally performed under the name ‘The Cockroaches’ at smaller, unannounced shows. This nickname celebrates their enduring career and suggests they have no plans to disappear anytime soon.

The Rolling Stones are releasing “Rough and Twisted” before their expected new album arrives in July. Their last album, Hackney Diamonds, was generally well-received when it came out in 2023. It was the band’s 26th studio album released in the US and their 24th in the UK.

With the exception of their 1997 album, Bridges to Babylon, all of the band’s studio albums have landed in the top five on the UK charts. Similarly, every US release, aside from their 1964 album England’s Newest Hit Makers, has also reached the top five in the United States.

The upcoming album doesn’t have a confirmed title yet, but online speculation, as reported by Louder, points to Foreign Tongues. It was produced by Andrew Watt, a well-known producer who has previously worked with rock legends like the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, having recently produced McCartney’s album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane.

While The Rolling Stones don’t have any confirmed tour dates after their new album, they aren’t planning to stop making music anytime soon. NME reports that the band has already started working on a follow-up album, with 10 songs in the works, though a release date hasn’t been set.
