Doctor Who star hints at return for second stint in the TARDIS: “You never quite leave”

Doctor Who star Jo Martin would be open to returning to the beloved BBC show as the Fugitive Doctor.

Martin first played this incarnation of the Doctor in 2020 alongside Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, and reprised the role for an audio drama last year.

The star, whose other credits include The Marlow Murder Club, recently weighed in on the possibility of playing the Doctor again, branding Doctor Who “the job that keeps on giving”.

“It was a blessing,” Martin said of her Doctor Who role (via RadioTimes.com).

“I mean, I’ve had a great career before that. I’ve been really blessed. Because, as you know, maybe five per cent of us work in this business, but I’ve always been in work.

“But Doctor Who put me on the map in America and just sort of upgraded the kind of jobs I could get here as well.”

Speaking about a possible return, Martin said there’s a chance for her Fugitive Doctor to make a surprise appearance in an upcoming season.

“It’s an amazing family to be a part of, and it’s a job that keeps on giving, because you never quite leave. There’s always that chance that you can have to go back and do this or do that. You just don’t know, it’s wonderful,” she said.

“And I’m still friends with Jodie and everyone, and I’m so happy to see our new Doctor just flying with this whole thing.”

The current Doctor Martin is referring to is Ncuti Gatwa, who debuted in the iconic role in the 2023 specials and went on to star in season 14.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
