That Poor Innocent Kid

Marcus Mumford of Brit folk rock outfit Mumford and Sons was left amazed at a gig  Down Under after a fan revealed they had named their son after his band.

The parent had attended a surprise show by the hitmakers in Sydney on Sunday and used a pause in the performance to pass her son’s passport to Marcus.

The mother, Katrina Weynberg, later posted a video in which Marcus and his band mates can be seen reading the name on her son’s passport.

At some moment, the 38-year-old pop idol looks taken aback as he witnesses the heartfelt tribute from his devoted followers towards his band.

‘We named our son Mumford and the band checked out his passport,’ Weynberg captioned the post, which has attracted over 189K viewers on TikTok since it was posted on Sunday.

Nevertheless, the video has sparked a wave of critique from TikTok users, who found it unusual to name a child after a rock band.

‘Mumford is a horrible name. What the hell?’ moaned one user.

Added another shocked TikTokker: ‘God parents need to remember they are naming adults.’

That poor innocent kid,’ said another.

Still, some saw the humour in the situation with one user joking: ‘The baby is both the Mumford and the sons.

Added another viewer:  ‘People forget they are naming future adults, not pets.’

Meanwhile, quite a few users on the post stood by the parents for their decision.

) The first individual praised the name, saying, “I really like that name,” while the second person dismissed the controversy with a chuckle, stating, “Just another case of overreacting as usual, ha-ha.”)

‘Such a cute name…and such a cute tribute to the band (that I’m guessing is one of your favorites),’ said another supporter: ‘Don’t listen to other people’s opinions!!’

Mumford and Sons played the show on Sunday in Sydney’s Bavarian restaurant in the CBD free of charge.

The intimate gig came after Marcus posted to his social media to announce the surprise show only hours ahead of a 5pm start.

According to witnesses, Marcus’ announcement met with a massive response with hundreds of fans lined up down York Street to land a spot at the small venue.

On Monday night the band will take to the stage at the Sydney Opera House to play a sell-out show.

It is the chart topping band’s first major gig in Australia in six years.

Formed in 2007, Mumford and Sons have attracted much acclaim for their mix of folk and rock.

They achieved global recognition after their hit single “Little Lion Man” became successful in the year 2009.

The tune was included on their Sigh No More album which was a major success in the UK, Australia and the US.

In 2012, they released a successful album called Babel as a follow-up, and this was followed by other popular albums: Wilder Man in 2015, Johannesburg in 2016, and Delta in 2018.
