Neill Blomkamp signs on for Starship Troopers reboot
Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has signed on for a new Starship Troopers movie, which he will both write and direct.
In the science fiction novel “Starship Troopers,” penned by Robert A Heinlein, we follow a 23rd-century teen named Johnny Rico and his fellow soldiers as they serve in the military under the Earth government, the United Citizen Federation. This federation is engaged in an interstellar war against an extraterrestrial species called the Arachnids.
In 1997, Paul Verhoeven directed a film that was a satire of a certain book. The movie, which featured Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, and Michael Ironside in its cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming revival is being developed by Columbia Pictures, and will not be a remake of the original movie. Instead, the goal is to reportedly go back to the source material.
As well as writing and directing, Blomkamp will also produce the project, alongside his partner and wife Terri Tatchell. The duo have previously worked together on the sci-fi action movies District 9, which earned four Oscar nominations, and Chappie.
Most recently, Blomkamp directed a Gran Turismo adaptation for Sony Pictures, which achieved both critical and commercial success, grossing over $122 million worldwide.
“Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver,” read the official synopsis.
In its 3-star review, Digital Spy said: “It’s a story tailor-made for Hollywood and it’s only a surprise that it’s taken this long. It turns Gran Turismo into a rousing underdog sports movie more than a video-game adaptation, although there are plenty of nods to the game. You’ll wish for more of the actual true story, but the movie is still an entertaining late-summer blockbuster that’ll get the pulse racing.”
