Sir Chris Hoy’s Wife Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis and Her Own Battle with MS

In simpler terms, Lady Sarra Hoy, the wife of Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy, has shared insights on Chris’ strength in facing cancer while she herself deals with Multiple Sclerosis, a condition she had kept private until now.

In an emotional first solo interview, Lady Sarra spoke to Lorraine Kelly on ITV’s Lorraine as part of the chat-show host’s March4March campaign.

As a dedicated follower of the legendary athlete Sir Chris, I was deeply saddened to learn last year that he had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer at the age of 48.

Not long afterward, it was discovered that Lady Sarra had Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a health issue that impacts both the brain and the nervous system.

Lady Sarra mentioned that numerous women shared with her about having undergone testing, which was prompted by her husband’s diagnosis.

She was told by some individuals that their partners, parents, and uncles, among others, got tested, and it was discovered and treated in each case.)

When asked how she was coping, she told Kelly: ‘Really well, thank you. There’s another version of my life where I’m still unaware that something is trundling on.

‘Here and now, I’m really lucky. We’ve been unlucky in a very small area of our lives. The rest, we are surrounded by wonderful people.’

‘I’ve always been Chris’ number one fan, and to see people saying these lovely things about him, I can’t put into words what it’s meant to both of us.’

Lady Sarra’s MS diagnosis came just a week after the sports star’s cancer revelation.

After undergoing a regular MRI scan as part of an investigation into a strange tingling feeling she had been experiencing in her face and tongue, she received the test results.

Interestingly, she decided to hide her own diagnosis from Sir Chris and their kids during his first round of cancer treatments, focusing instead on his health and wellness.

In his memoir titled “All That Matters: My Toughest Race Yet,” the athlete referred to Sarra’s multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis as a ‘massive setback’.

But she admitted he was in awe of the strength and resilience she displayed during that time.

The March4March campaign, which Lady Sarra is supporting, aims to help the one in four Brits struggling with their physical and mental health low mood by promoting the mental health benefits of exercise and movement.

Sir Chris also has his own campaign to encourage men to get prostate cancer checks.

Ever since he disclosed his illness back in October, this Scottish individual has been leading an initiative to educate people about the condition, which happens to be the most prevalent type of cancer within their country.

Thanks to his efforts, more than 75,000 men have used Prostate Cancer UK’s online risk checker, with 80% discovering they were at higher risk and advised to contact their GP for further testing.

Sir Chris has also raised over £55,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, has been instrumental in starting a public conversation about men’s health.

In a brave revelation last year, Chris shared that he had ‘just two to four years’ left to live.

In his autobiography, the Olympic athlete recounted that just a few weeks after learning about his own cancer diagnosis, he received the news of his wife’s medical condition as well.

In conversation with The Times, Sir Chris disclosed that his children’s presence intensifies the difficulty of accepting their diagnosis, serving as a constant reminder of the high stakes involved.
