Why is Mamma Mia 3 taking so long? Amanda Seyfried thinks she knows

Amanda Seyfried has explained why she thinks Mamma Mia! 3 is taking so long.

Several cast members from the hit series have expressed interest in a new installment of the beloved movies based on ABBA tunes. If a third movie follows, it would be another ten years since the second one was released, suggesting a similar decade-long wait.

While cast availability is sometimes an issue with films with big casts such as this, Seyfried has a different possible reason for why the third Mamma Mia! is taking so long.

“Producer Judy Craymer is always working on it, but Universal still has to release Wicked 2,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “The first Wicked had to stall when Mamma Mia! 2 was getting made. It’s an either/or situation with musicals.

I believe Universal is confident that we’ll eventually go ahead with the plan, which is why they’re taking their time. The downside is that it will likely end up being twice as expensive.

In a playful manner, she pointed out an apparent challenge could arise because Meryl Streep expresses interest in reprising her role, however, her character met her demise between the initial two movies and made a ghostly appearance towards the end instead.

Perhaps it’s a problem. They can’t seem to find a solution to revive her,” she explained.

“From what I was told, that was her choice — so maybe it’s on her to write it. I’m sure she has ideas. Meryl’s a genius. But I hope they figure it out. The one day that she was on set for the last movie was when it finally felt like we were all together again.”

Both Mamma Mia! films can currently be streamed with a Sky Go/NOW subscription, while the second can also be watched for free on ITVX.
