Netflix’s ‘wonderfully preposterous’ murder mystery to get a second season but with a whole new cast
Netflix’s “remarkably funny yet absurd” show The Perfect Couple seems poised for a second installment, but with an entirely fresh ensemble of actors this time around.
A murder mystery, released in September, centers around a grand wedding disrupted by a homicide, and it’s adapted from a novel written by Elin Hilderbrand.
According to Variety, the streaming platform is working on a new series, this time adapting Hilderbrand’s book “Swan Song,” with Joanna Calo, who co-showran “The Bear,” set to supervise the upcoming season.
In the new version of the book, you’ll encounter fresh personalities and plot twists, making it doubtful that well-known figures like Nicole Kidman will reappear in future adaptations.
Nonetheless, there’s a possibility of overlap, since the character Ed Kapenash from Swan Song was rechristened as Dan Carter in The Perfect Couple, with Michael Beach portraying him.
Much like Swan Song, another story is centered around the Richardson family, residing in Nantucket, who acquire a lavish $22 million summer house, yet the origin of their riches remains shrouded in secrecy.
The neighborhood figures like the soon-to-retire police chief Kapenash and Sharon, currently navigating a divorce, find themselves entangled in the unfolding events.
The Richardsons host grand soirees, engage in affectionate banter with several residents, showcase their affluence by owning not just one, but two luxurious yachts, and arouse unattainable expectations in everyone they encounter, as suggested in the summary.
If their house collapses in flames and their most important worker disappears, the entire island erupts with concern.
The Perfect Couple became a big viewership hit for Netflix, though proved more mixed with critics.
The New York Magazine/Vulture found it “extremely funny in a ridiculous way” in their critique, while Empire described it as “sweetly sentimental, absurdly entertaining, and extremely soap-like – yet the captivating storyline, familiar characters, and stellar cast of The Perfect Couple will leave you addicted”.
In our review for Digital Spy, we gave the show four stars and stated: “The Perfect Couple offers plenty of entertainment. It maintains a light-hearted tone throughout, and with only six episodes, each ranging from 40 to 50 minutes, it’s not a heavy time investment.
The Perfect Couple is available on Netflix now.
