Breaking Down the Ending of Peacock’s Gritty New Thriller Long Bright River

Day after day, it’s another intense crime series centered around tracking down a ruthless murderer who has been preying on defenseless females.

In “Long Bright River,” currently streaming in eight episodes on Peacock, Philadelphia police officer Mickey Fitzpatrick, played by Amanda Seyfried, delves into the mystery behind an increasing number of sex workers found dead under suspicious circumstances in Kensington, a neighborhood heavily impacted by the opioid crisis. As Mickey pursues the case professionally, her personal connections to Kensington and its residents—notably her younger sister Kacey (Ashleigh Cummings), who has vanished after battling addiction for years—inevitably draw her into perilous grounds.

Despite the police department labeling the deaths as overdoses, compelling evidence points towards something else, prompting Mickey to take action independently. With the assistance of her longtime associate and ex-partner Truman Dawes, who’s been on leave since getting hurt in a job-related incident several months back, Mickey embarks on an investigation that uncovers a sinister network of systemic corruption within her own department.

The television series, Long Bright River, was tailored for the screen by Nikki Toscano, who served as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer (known for The Offer and Hunters). This production is adapted from Liz Moore’s 2020 bestselling novel of the same name, and it largely maintains the intricate plot twists found in its original form, since Liz Moore also contributed as a writer and executive producer on this show.

Who is the killer in Long Bright River?

In Episode 6, it’s disclosed that pregnant and sober Kacey has been residing at the residence of her previously thought-to-be deceased father Daniel (Michael Gaston). The second-to-last episode concludes with a heartbroken Kacey informing Mickey that the officer responsible for the murders is none other than her ex-partner, Truman.

Mickey finds it hard to accept that her boyfriend, Truman, might be involved in such acts. Yet, her suspicions grow when she follows him to a nearby drug den and observes him administering a needle to an unconscious woman. In a sudden turn of events, she confronts him with a gun. However, the girl had overdosed, and Truman was injecting her with naloxone, not insulin – the substance used to murder other victims. It’s revealed that Truman has been looking out for an old friend’s at-risk acquaintances in their neighborhood. Sadly, the harm to their relationship is irreversible by this point.

In their confrontation, Mickey questions Kacey about accusations against Truman. Kacey explains she was informed solely that the officer involved in the crime was Mickey’s former partner. However, it wasn’t known to Kacey that Truman had taken a leave of absence. Eventually, Mickey connects the dots and understands that the true perpetrator is Eddie Lafferty, her latest partner, as portrayed by Dash Mihok. Earlier in the investigation, Mickey had asked to be removed from working with Eddie due to his disregard for the victims who were being targeted. Upon showing Kacey a photo of Lafferty, Kacey recognizes him as the distributor of a new drug causing havoc in Kensington and admits he associates with many sex workers she is acquainted with.

Eventually, Mickey finds herself facing off with Lafferty at an abandoned church. Unbeknownst to her, Kacey and her drug-dealing ex-partner Dock had previously set a trap for Lafferty here. As Lafferty confesses to Mickey that he killed the women because things escalated, Mickey suspects they began blackmailing him after he continued demanding sexual favors in exchange for stopping his extortion. Just as gunshots echo, Lafferty is hit and collapses. Kacey and four of her sex worker companions, one armed, emerge from hiding, revealing they were concealed in the room all along. In the end, Mickey fires one more shot at Lafferty, demonstrating her loyalty to the women.

Despite discovering that corruption in the force extends beyond Lafferty’s offenses, Mickey finds himself powerless to take action, leading him to resign in the end. However, the series concludes on an optimistic note for the Fitzpatrick family: Kacey delivers a healthy baby, and the sisters finally reconcile after years of estrangement.
