Binky Felstead didn’t seem bothered by recent criticism from a bakery owner, and instead focused on sharing photos from her family’s trip to New York City on Friday.
Former Made In Chelsea star, age 35, faced public criticism from Reshmi Bennett, who said the star asked her to bake a cake for her son Wilder’s third birthday, promising an Instagram post in return.
Reshmi has often publicly called out influencers who ask for free cakes, and recently she criticized Binky after receiving a message, reportedly from Binky’s assistant, requesting one.
A representative for Binky has stated that the inquiry was routine and expressed their frustration that a private request became public.
Binky recently posted photos from her family vacation on Instagram Stories. These included a picture taken at the famous Grand Central Station and another of her eight-year-old daughter, India, standing beside a Tesla Cybertruck.
Just hours after Reshmi publicly questioned her, Binky shared some posts. The issue stemmed from Binky allegedly offering to promote a bakery on Instagram in return for a free cake for her son Wilder’s third birthday.
Reshmi, the owner of the high-end London cake shop Anges de Sucre, has been in the news before for publicly expressing her frustration with influencers who ask for cakes for free.
Her social media is filled with posts stating she won’t accept simply being promoted as payment for her work; she requires actual money.
It appears Binky didn’t see the message, because her assistant asked Reshmi to bake a cake for her son Wilder’s third birthday.
On Thursday, Reshmi posted screenshots to Instagram revealing that Binky’s team had asked for a free yellow train-shaped cake in exchange for promotion on Instagram.
Reshmi jokingly created a fake GoFundMe page requesting £1.4 million for the cake, a playful nod to the large number of followers celebrity Binky has online. It’s also believed Reshmi herself has a net worth of around £1.4 million.
At first, Reshmi hid Binky’s name in the screenshots of the emails she shared. However, she later revealed Binky’s identity in a subsequent post.
A spokesperson for Binky explained to the Daily Mail that the request was a typical one from her assistant. They offered to promote a company on social media if the company provided a birthday cake.
Binky wasn’t part of these email conversations and is currently on vacation with family. We understand that this kind of teamwork isn’t a good fit for everyone, and we respect your choice to not participate.
Honestly, I’m just really bummed to see a private conversation leaked like that. It’s super common in this world for deals like this to happen – everyone benefits, usually! It’s just… disappointing to see it aired out publicly when it was meant to be a friendly discussion.
The customer initially requested a yellow train-themed cake and also mentioned a potential collaboration with an Instagram influencer who has 1.4 million followers.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE what Reshmi did! She was totally on it, trying to make a sale happen! She immediately asked the client for everything – their budget, where they lived (postcode, you know!), and even asked for pictures! She’s just amazing at what she does, turning inquiries into actual sales! I’m seriously impressed.
Binky’s team responded, asking if we’d be interested in a collaboration. They proposed giving the cake as a gift in exchange for a post about it on [redacted]’s Instagram account.
Instead of being confrontational, as she usually would, Reshmi calmly told Binky she was disappointed. She then pointed out Binky’s financial resources, implying Binky should have offered to pay instead.
Binky’s team acknowledged Reshmi’s concern about how things looked and said they would discuss payment with the star before giving her a final answer.
Reshmi then shared screenshots of their conversation on Instagram.
After seeing her post, Binky’s team sent her a disappointed email, clarifying that their intention wasn’t to simply get a free cake.
Binky often shares content about her children on Instagram, which is very popular with her followers. This can be great for businesses because it introduces their brands to a wider audience they might not normally connect with.
Binky’s team ended the email by apologizing for reaching out, explaining that they understood this type of collaboration wasn’t welcome, and assuring them they didn’t intend to cause any offense.
After getting feedback from Binky’s team, Reshmi set up a GoFundMe page featuring a bright yellow train cake designed with the help of AI, inspired by the show Made In Chelsea.
She shared that they recently made a special cake for Binky Felstead’s son, who is turning three. The cake was designed to look like a yellow train.
We were really excited! We love making cakes for kids, and this one sounded like a fun project, especially since it was for a well-known TV personality. However, there was a slight problem – they wanted to pay us with an Instagram story.
Let’s be real, things are challenging for everyone right now, and that includes those of us who create content online. I can definitely imagine a scenario where someone like Binky had to quickly change plans – maybe a sponsored trip to Dubai got canceled and she unexpectedly ended up traveling to the US to be with family for Easter, all while feeling pretty stressed about it. It happens!
We felt better knowing she has 1.4 million followers who actively interact with her content, particularly posts including her children. However, we’re aware the internet isn’t always safe, despite appearances.
Our energy company is a bit behind the times and still requires payment with cash instead of things like publicity or social media interaction.
‘We did try to explain, but they simply will not accept Instagram tags as legal tender.
‘So, in the spirit of collaboration, we thought we’d appeal to Binky’s 1.4 million followers.
Even a small donation of just £1 from everyone would allow us to build an amazing yellow train cake and cover our energy bills.
Binky is far from the only star to have asked for free cake in exchange for engagement.
In 2023, Catherine Tyldesley had to cancel her 40th birthday party after unexpectedly receiving online criticism for a disagreement about a free cake.
The actress, known for her role on Coronation Street, used the event planning company NVRLND for her party. However, NVRLND caused a stir when they asked a local bakery to donate a large birthday cake, a smaller cake for the actress’s husband, and 100 cupcakes – all for free.
Three Little Birds Bakery owner Rebecca Severs was offered promotion instead of payment for an order, but she refused. She explained that while publicity is nice, her employees need actual money to support their families, stating, ‘You can’t pay rent with Instagram likes.’
Rebecca, who lives in Keighley, posted on Facebook about an email her bakery received. The email was from a PR company representing a famous celebrity who wanted a cake for a 40th birthday party in September.
They also requested 100 cupcakes and an extra smaller birthday cake for her husband.
The owner of Three Little Birds Bakery expressed disappointment that a certain celebrity seemingly isn’t paying people for their work. She asked for sympathy for those affected and questioned why women aren’t supporting each other in this situation.
Catherine reacted with a video, saying she was completely surprised and didn’t know what to think. She expressed hope that the baker had gotten the attention she wanted.
Starting the video, the actress said: ‘Cake gate! WHAT!’
I wasn’t aware that any emails were being sent. I’m not currently collaborating with OK! Magazine on any projects, and I think NVRLND is a fantastic company.
I’ve worked with these performers before, and they’re incredibly talented. However, they’ve been unfairly portrayed in this situation.
She called the scandal completely strange and implied Rebecca was trying to get attention by sharing the email on Facebook.
Rebecca shared an email this week announcing a 40th birthday party in Manchester on September 1st, 2023, for a famous celebrity. The email came from the celebrity’s management team.
As a dedicated supporter, I’m thrilled to hear that in exchange for providing services at the event, we’ll be getting some fantastic exposure! They’re offering promotion to their huge social media audience – over 700,000 followers – and even a feature in OK Magazine. It’s a great way to get our name out there!
‘They will be crediting all the suppliers on these platforms.’
As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people to consider the networking potential of events! This particular party was packed with influential people – actors, musicians, TV and film professionals – and I knew attending could open doors to some amazing opportunities. Basically, it was a chance to really boost my career!
The email explained that the birthday party’s theme will feature pinks, sparkles, and flamingos.
They then requested one birthday cake with the theme ‘camp as tits’, as well as 100 cupcakes.
They then requested a second, smaller cake, explaining it was actually for her husband’s birthday and they wanted it to be a surprise.
The bakery would get publicity in exchange for providing the cake. This included promotion on the celebrity’s social media accounts – which have over 700,000 followers – and coverage in OK! Magazine. The party itself was expected to attract a lot of famous guests from the TV, film, and music industries, potentially leading to future business opportunities for the bakery.
Rebecca didn’t realize she’d be supporting a former contestant from Strictly Come Dancing, a mother of two, but it didn’t change anything for her.
NVRLND, an event management company in Leeds, released a statement saying their email was misinterpreted.
I was so excited to hear that NVRLND reached out to Three Little Birds Bakery! Apparently, they wanted to see if the bakery would be interested in catering a party for one of NVRLND’s clients. It’s fantastic to see these kinds of collaborations happening!
Our client will pay for all of Three Little Birds Bakery’s costs as part of this partnership. In return, the bakery will create social media content and provide publicity for our client, both locally and nationally. NVRLND will also be compensated only through expense coverage.
We chose to partner with Three Little Birds Bakery because we wanted to support a local business and help it succeed.
We help small, local businesses grow and stay busy, just like they have in our previous partnerships. We guarantee no business will be asked to cover any costs – neither we nor our clients expect that.
‘Our email communication to Three Little Birds has unfortunately been completely misconstrued.
‘Due to contractual obligations, we are unable to comment on the identity of our client.’
