Peter Andre has spoken about his distress after his daughter, Princess, received disturbing and explicit images from strangers online.
The 53-year-old singer has long advocated for banning social media for children under 16. He recently revealed the distress he felt after his daughter was targeted with hateful online messages.
Last year, Princess started appearing in her own show on ITV, called The Princess Diaries. An early clip from the series showed her sharing some hateful messages she’d received with her father, Peter.
The presenter has five children: his two children from his previous marriage to Katie Price – Junior, age 20, and Princess – and three children with his current wife, Emily: Amelia, 12, Theo, 9, and baby Arabella, who is one year old.
Peter said it felt much worse when his own daughter was involved, and he described the messages as disgusting.
I’ve always known life could be tough, and people can be unpredictable. But honestly, when something happens to your own child, it just… changes everything. It hits you so much harder than you ever expect, even though you thought you understood hardship before.
He told The Sun he was baffled by why some men think it’s acceptable to send unsolicited photos of their genitals, questioning what goes through their minds when they do so.
‘I think really it’s just men doing it, it’s gross and stresses me out.’
Peter has expressed strong support for banning social media access for children under 16. He recently wrote in an article for New Magazine, praising Australia’s implementation of such a ban, calling it a positive step.
You know, I get asked a lot about putting my kids on social media, and whether it was a mistake. It’s easy to forget, but when these platforms first came out, we were all figuring things out together! None of us really understood the potential downsides back then – we were all just exploring this new world.
We’re now understanding the capabilities of AI, which is why we’ve decided to keep young children from using it. I completely agree with this decision.
I realize this might not be what younger people want to be told, but it’s really important for their well-being. I’m hoping everyone else will start to understand how serious these risks are.
When the first season of The Princess Diaries aired in August, audiences watched Peter’s response to the hurtful messages his daughter had been getting.
When Princess was 17, a video surfaced of her talking with a friend about the downsides of being famous and having a large social media following at such a young age.
Princess explained to her friend that she often receives messages from older men who comment on her appearance, sometimes even asking her out on dates. She said they frequently focus on her feet.
Oh my gosh, she actually spoke directly to the camera, and she was so upset! She couldn’t even bring herself to read the message aloud, she said it was totally disgusting! I mean, you could just feel her reaction, it was intense!
I really enjoy my work, and I love connecting with people online. However, there’s a hidden negative side to social media that many don’t realize, and unfortunately, I sometimes receive truly awful and inappropriate messages.
‘Like I’m literally 17, that’s actually not OK.’
Later in the show, while talking to her dad, Princess shares some of the messages she’s been receiving with Peter.
When he enquires as to what they are asking her for she replies ‘mostly feet pictures’.
An alarmed Peter then says: ‘Please God that’s the only thing they ask for.’
Princess then divulged to him that some of the men also ask: ‘Are you finally legal now?’
Peter quickly covered his face with his hands and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t expect it to turn out this way…”
Ugh, it genuinely hurt to hear that, like a punch to the gut. It’s awful, honestly, because even after everything, you’ll always be my baby, and it just… it gets to me, you know?
