Mastermind fans fume as specialist subject “ruins” BBC quiz show: ‘Shouldn’t be allowed’
Fans of the game show Mastermind have vocalized their disappointment due to a specific contestant’s chosen expertise, arguing that it may not be suitable for competition.
On Monday night’s broadcast, contestant Gary Austin chose the TV show “Friday Night Dinner” as his discussion subject.
On the other hand, some viewers expressed their displeasure on social media, stating that TV shows like “BBC’s” shouldn’t be used as special topics if they are brief and require prior knowledge.
It’s wonderful that you enjoyed a few episodes of a show. However, watching TV shows is quite different from studying subjects like world history, science, or literature. They jokingly commented about it on X.
“It seems that ‘Friday Night Dinner‘ is an overly specific topic for ‘Mastermind‘, as one viewer pointed out after 15 hours of television, while another argued it spoils the show when contestants answer questions about sitcoms.
One person suggested that it wouldn’t be fair to allow individuals to specialize in sitcoms on ‘Mastermind,’ stating, ‘It’s a farce, an imitation of the real thing.’
In the end, Gary turned out to be the main victor of the episode and progressed to the next stage. Not only did he accumulate a substantial 12 points during the Friday Night Dinner segment, but he also demonstrated his knowledge in various areas, ultimately amassing a total of 22 points.
Later on, the competitor expressed his intense excitement and shock, confessing that he’s typically a “spectator when it comes to trivia.
In an enthusiastic manner, he shared his passion for the TV show, “Friday Night Dinner,” stating that he had penned numerous queries concerning it.
Instead of reading them on my mobile, I requested my wife to take on the role of Clive [Myrie] daily, to read out several hundred questions to me. This way, I can respond and practice maintaining my presence under the spotlight.
Mastermind airs on BBC Two.
