Death in Paradise boss shares why returning crime drama is “more joyous to write” than BBC show
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d rather dive back into crafting the intricate puzzles of my returning mystery crime drama, “Death in Paradise,” than tackle the challenges of any BBC series. The thrill of creating captivating whodunits keeps me hooked!
In a Q&A for the second series of “The Marlow Murder Club”, the showrunner expressed his satisfaction about moving on from the single-episode structure of “Death in Paradise”, as he now has the opportunity to unfold the murder mystery over a two-part storyline.
The show’s creator expressed that it significantly enhances the writing process, stating that it makes the work more delightful. He elaborated that, for instance, on “Death in Paradise,” one is always conscious of it being about plot after plot.
“You put a motor on the plot. Whereas here, there is time.”
Thorogood praised broadcaster UKTV for giving him the flexibility to create the show in this way.
It was UKTV that made our idea possible, as initially, they requested a unique story for each episode, similar to shows like “Death in Paradise”. Almost every time.
However, you have just 45 minutes to narrate a tale, and one observation I’ve made about Death in Paradise is the enjoyable banter surrounding the case, the exploration of characters’ interactions, and the growth of their relationships.
Initially, we asked if it was possible to structure our story across two episodes. This way, we could fully explore the fun aspects and deepen the relationships. Initially, UKTV wasn’t sure about this approach, but they were willing to innovate and create a new model for it, specifically for us. Without their flexibility, we wouldn’t have been able to craft these engaging two-episode narratives.
The TV series starring Jo Martin, focusing on a group of untrained detectives, is coming back soon with an additional three tales woven into its six episodes.
The Marlow Murder Club makes its premiere on U&Drama and U starting this coming Wednesday, 19th March, at 8pm. You can already stream season 1 on U right now.
