Millie Bobby Brown expressed her annoyance about internet bullies who have criticized her for alternating between an American and British accent in interviews.
Millie expressed her thoughts during her guest spot on the Smartless podcast, which is hosted by actors Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman.
The Stranger Things star claimed that ‘accent-gate’ was ‘such a huge thing for a minute’.
In my experience, it can be quite disheartening when a particular aspect of oneself becomes the focus of attention, such as my accent. For a moment there, it seemed like it was everywhere I went, and people were eagerly discussing it. Remarkably, some found it difficult to accept or understand it.
Last year, a peculiar dispute ignited following her performance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy Fallon. It left spectators puzzled when she switched between an American and British accent.
After that, Millie added to the mix-up when she displayed her latest underwear assortment from her Florence by Mills clothing brand on social media. Once more, her followers picked up on alterations in her accent.

In the podcast, she explained that variations in her accent stem from having British parents and marrying an American – specifically, Jake Bongiovi, son of Jon Bon Jovi, whom she wedded in May 2024.
In the presence of his family, I find myself adopting an American accent naturally. However, when I recently visited England, it only took hearing my parents’ voices for me to revert back to my original accent. The 21-year-old explained this.
Arnett remarked that he found it impressive the way Millie could seamlessly transition between thoughts during conversations.
The actress said that it felt similar to playing a character.
You’re asking me to portray these characters, yet you don’t want me to transform into real people. To summarize, my understanding is that I should act as directed and it’s all part of the performance.
Whenever I’m with my fiancé or entertainers like Jimmy Fallon, whose accents are distinctly American, I find myself wanting to mimic their speech patterns!

She’s currently in England and finds herself wanting to mimic the local accent. She clarifies that this isn’t done intentionally and apologizes if it might be offensive. However, she emphasizes that she’s doing her utmost to achieve this.
In the course of her extended interview on the podcast, Millie additionally discussed her in-laws whom she describes as remarkably genuine individuals.
Millie expressed, “He’s been fantastic and Jon Bon Jovi has been incredibly supportive. He’s full of information and his knowledge is astonishing. He’s truly an outstanding individual.
In addition, she also talked about her forthcoming film with Chris Pratt titled “The Electric State,” scheduled for release on Netflix on the 14th of March.
Millie, who hails from British parents, was born in sunny Marbella, Spain. At the age of four, her family relocated to Bournemouth, England.
The family then finally settled in Orlando when she was eight-years-old.
