A critically acclaimed boxing movie, featuring one of Christian Bale’s strongest performances, is now available on a new streaming service. Bale first gained widespread recognition in 2000 with his role in American Psycho, and went on to star in films like Equilibrium, The Machinist, and the English dub of Howl’s Moving Castle. He later became famous for playing Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight series. But, in between those blockbusters and other successful movies like The Prestige and 3:10 to Yuma, Bale portrayed a real person in this highly-regarded boxing film.
The critically acclaimed film The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by David O. Russell, is now available on Peacock as of April 1st. The movie tells the true story of boxer Micky Ward (played by Wahlberg) and his journey to success, alongside his complex relationship with his older half-brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), a former boxer struggling with personal issues. It’s a story about overcoming obstacles and finding your own path, even when overshadowed by family. The film also features Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, and Jack McGee.
When The Fighter came out in 2010, it was a big hit with audiences and at the box office. Made with a $25 million budget, the film earned $129 million worldwide. It also benefited from strong DVD and early video-on-demand sales, likely increasing its total earnings. This success was fueled by positive reviews: the film received a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and audiences gave it an 89% score.
‘The Fighter’ Is The Modern Equivalent of ‘Rocky’
Compared to the classic film Rocky, The Fighter feels like the most authentic boxing movie of recent years. Rocky captivated audiences with both its boxing action and the personal story of its main character. While Hollywood briefly favored dramatic and intense boxing films like Southpaw and the Rocky sequel Creed, The Fighter offered a more realistic and down-to-earth portrayal of the sport.
I was completely blown away by how real the boxing felt – it wasn’t like anything I’ve seen in movies like Rocky, Creed, or Southpaw. They even recreated a real fight of Micky Ward’s! But beyond the action, the story really got to me. Micky’s trying so hard to build his own life while staying connected to his family and especially his brother, and it’s so compelling. Then there’s Dicky, who struggles with his temper but desperately wants to be someone his family can be proud of. Both Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale brought these internal conflicts to life with such powerful performances; I really felt for both of them.
Boxing Movies Need to Learn From ‘The Fighter’

Similar to how Rocky defined boxing films in the 70s and 80s, The Fighter sets a new standard for the genre. The movie truly shines because of its characters, particularly the complex and fraught relationship between Micky and Dicky, which drives the story forward. The boxing scenes themselves are also fantastic – they’re well-shot, emphasize skill and strategy, and feel genuinely realistic, avoiding the overly dramatic or artificial look that often plagues sports movies.
