Simon Fisher-Becker, British actor known for ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Harry Potter,’ dies at 63

Noted British actor Simon Fisher-Becker, recognized primarily for his roles in the television show “Doctor Who” and the initial “Harry Potter” film, has passed away.

Kathleen Barry, who worked with Fisher-Becker, shared the news of her dear friend and client’s passing on Facebook over the weekend. The friend’s spouse also verified the sad event through a short post on Facebook. Barry did not disclose any further information about the cause or circumstances of the actor’s death but fondly remembered him as someone who was consistently kind, considerate, and engaged with everyone. He had reached the age of 63.

In my message, I expressed my heartfelt gratitude for the immense assistance he provided me in various aspects. My sympathies are extended to his beloved husband Tony, his family members including his brothers, as well as his numerous admirers.

Television

In my perspective, I was taken aback when John Lithgow shared details about his role in the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series on HBO. He expressed it as a complete surprise to him.

Fisher-Becker hails from London, born on November 25, 1961. He embarked on a diverse acting journey that started in the late 80s, encompassing TV shows, films, ads, and stage performances. His impressive portfolio featured numerous TV roles, with “Puppy Love” and “Doctor Who” for BBC being his most notable projects.

In the popular science fiction show “Doctor Who”, the character played by Fisher-Becker frequently appeared alongside Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Dorium Maldovar, a blue-skinned merchant who ran an interstellar trading post called the Maldovarium. Although his role as Dorium in “Doctor Who” spanned just three episodes, Fisher-Becker continued to portray this character in other projects linked to the enduring BBC series.

Before becoming a member of the “Doctor Who” cast, Fisher-Becker had been an ardent admirer of the show for quite some time, as Barry recalled. The excitement I felt upon phoning him when he got the role will always stay with me, she mentioned in her statement.

Movies

Noted British actress Joan Plowright, known for her roles in movies like ‘Enchanted April,’ ‘The Entertainer,’ and ‘Spiderwick Chronicles,’ has passed away at the age of 95.

Additionally, he has made guest appearances on shows such as “Waterside,” “3some,” “Getting On,” “Afterlife,” “99-1,” and “Hale and Pace.

Fisher-Becker has been featured in various productions, including TV movies like “An Ungentlemanly Act,” the big screen adaptation of “Les Misérables” from 2012, and the initial film of the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” In this last one, he portrayed the Fat Friar, a ghostly figure that haunts the corridors of Hogwarts.

On the stage, Fisher-Becker featured in performances of “The Busybody”, “The Emperor of the Moon”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Macbeth” and a solo rendition of “Hamlet: The Story of a Heavy Man”. Additionally, he authored a semi-autobiographical trilogy and uploaded personal videos to his YouTube channel. In his last video, posted on October 31st, Fisher-Becker reminisced about significant personal and global events that had taken place on Halloween in previous years – such as moving into a bungalow with his partner.

Fisher-Becker expressed his support for body positivity in his last video. He criticized claims that time off from work is more common among overweight employees. He pointed out that he only took eight days of sick leave during a span of 40 years in his career outside acting. After challenging stereotypes about larger individuals, Fisher-Becker concluded his video with a call to action.

“All I have to say is give fat people a chance.”
