The creators of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair wrote a new story hoping to bring back the original actor, but unfortunately, their plan didn’t succeed.
Erik Per Sullivan, who famously played Dewey on the TV show Malcolm in the Middle (2000-2006), wasn’t part of the show’s four-episode revival. He had retired from acting and is now a student at Harvard. According to co-star Jane Kaczmarek, he was offered a significant amount of money to return for the reunion, but he declined.
Tracy Katsky and Linwood Boomer, executive producers of Malcolm in the Middle, discussed with ScreenRant how they changed the planned storyline for Dewey (now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark) to fit Per Sullivan’s availability. However, Sullivan ultimately decided not to reprise his role.
Katsky said Dewey appeared mostly through laptop video calls during the revival because they were trying to persuade Erik to participate until the very last moment. The idea was that if Per Sullivan knew he’d only need to film a small amount, they could shoot everything remotely, and the actor wouldn’t have to travel to the set, given his busy schedule.
Despite attempts to have Per Sullivan continue appearing on the show remotely, he ultimately decided to leave. “We admire his commitment to his principles,” said Katsky. “Many people would have taken the opportunity, but he didn’t hesitate to decline.”
We had hoped Erik [Per Sullivan] would participate remotely using a laptop, and we kept trying to convince him right up until the last minute. Our idea was to film his part entirely remotely, so he wouldn’t even need to come to a studio or be present on set. We wanted to make it as convenient as possible for him, but he ultimately decided against it, and we completely respect his decision. I would have found it difficult to decline such an opportunity, but he did so quickly and easily.
The creator of Malcolm in the Middle, known as Boomer, shared a story about how Per Sullivan unexpectedly changed the dynamic during a negotiation. Boomer, who previously acted in Little House on the Prairie as Adam Kendall before becoming a producer, was asked by Sullivan if he wanted to return to acting. When Boomer declined, Sullivan simply told him to stop bringing it up.
So, my friend and I were chatting, and I jokingly suggested a project we could collaborate on. He basically called me out on it, asking if I wanted to get back into acting, which I definitely didn’t! He then pretty bluntly told me to stop asking him about it, which, honestly, was fair.
Once it was clear Per Sullivan wouldn’t be back, casting director Juel Bestrop began looking for someone new to play Dewey in the revival. She sent an audition tape from Ellsworth-Clark, and Katsky immediately noticed that he resembled the original Dewey even more closely than Erik did.
Some of the actors from Malcolm in the Middle were fooled during the audition process – they honestly thought a different actor was Per Sullivan. Ellsworth-Clark was ultimately cast and fit in seamlessly with the rest of the group, quickly becoming a beloved part of the team.
We were pretty anxious about recasting the role, knowing how beloved Erik was by fans. Dewey is iconic too, so finding someone to fill those shoes felt daunting. Our casting director, Juel Bestrop, worked tirelessly, and she was thrilled when a tape came in from Canada. She kept texting me late one night, insisting I watch this particular actor immediately. When we saw his audition, we were amazed – he actually resembled Dewey more than Erik did! It was fun to show the tape to Frankie, Chris, and Justin, and they agreed he could easily be mistaken for Erik. He fit in perfectly. It’s always challenging joining an established group with such a strong history, but our cast is incredibly welcoming and feels like a family. They’re genuinely kind and supportive of each other, which is different from how they sometimes act on screen. Caleb immediately connected with everyone and seemed right at home.
Boomer said Ellsworth-Clark had a uniquely captivating presence, with a distinctive way of speaking and moving that made him ideal to take over from Per Sullivan. According to the executive producer, Ellsworth-Clark understood the precise timing and delivery of humor, and crucially, knew how a joke landed differently when delivered by a character like Dewey compared to just anyone.
He possessed a similar, almost magical quality to Erik when playing Dewey – it was in his speech and how his eyes moved. It just felt right. He understood the timing and delivery of the jokes, and crucially, how a joke landed differently coming from the character of Dewey. We were thrilled with how Dewey’s personality developed, particularly his surprising romantic life, because it always felt true to the character.
It’s been two decades since Malcolm in the Middle ended, and now most of the original cast is reuniting for a new show, Life’s Still Unfair. This time, the series follows Malcolm as he tries to figure out adulthood – complete with a daughter and a girlfriend – and is living far from his family.
So, Lois and Hal are celebrating their anniversary, and they really want all their kids there, especially Malcolm. When he goes back to see them, it’s immediately clear things haven’t changed a bit – the family is still wonderfully, hilariously chaotic. It’s like no time has passed at all!
Critics have generally liked Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, giving it an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The four episodes, which all became available on Hulu at the same time, were created as a single reunion special, not a continuation of the show. However, the creators haven’t entirely dismissed the idea of making more episodes in the future.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is available to stream on Hulu.
