The Dark Ages” serves as a prequel to the 2016 version of “DOOM”. Instead of ending with the Slayer being in the coffin he breaks open at the start of that game, this new game could explore more stories set in a medieval era, according to the developers.
Hugo Martin, game director, mentioned that concluding the medieval chapter in the DOOM saga would essentially bring an end to the Dark Ages-like period within it, resembling the Chronicles of the Slayer. If they were to carry this storyline to its conclusion, it would mean no more medieval tales could be told. However, Martin didn’t announce any specific projects; instead, he suggested that leaving possibilities open might be more beneficial.
Martin also mentions that the game DOOM: The Dark Ages is planning to release a DLC chapter, similar to the story-based expansion, The Ancient Gods, for DOOM Eternal. This suggests another reason why ending the game with the Slayer being confined in a coffin might not make sense.
Martin confirmed that there is an expansion pack and similar content, but he’s careful not to reveal spoilers. He explained that instead of ending with the character in a coffin as seen at the start of 2016, the story involves them burying him under a collapsed building within that sarcophagus. The game does not conclude in this manner.
The game titled “DOOM: The Dark Ages” is arriving on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on the 15th of May. On that very day, it will be accessible through Xbox Game Pass on a first-day basis. If you’re interested, you can take a look at DOOM: The Dark Ages preview right here.
