Pierce Brosnan Slams Amazon’s Takeover of James Bond Franchise

Pierce Brosnan has said he doesn’t think that the next James Bond should be America.

From 1995 to 2002, a British actor aged 71 played the role of the spy across four movies, later replaced by Daniel Craig.

For quite some time, there has been much discussion about who will take on the role of Bond next. However, a significant development was reported by The Wall Street Journal in December 2024. According to their report, the Broccoli family, long-time producers of the Bond films, and Amazon seemed to have hit a roadblock in discussions for future movies. This impasse reportedly occurred after Amazon purchased MGM Studios and gained control over the franchise distribution rights in 2022.

On February 20th, it was declared that Amazon will take charge of the creative aspects for the James Bond (007) franchise, in partnership with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson from MGM Studios.

In conversation with The Telegraph, Brosnan expressed that it’s almost inevitable for Daniel Craig’s replacement in the James Bond role to be British, and he voiced regret over certain recent changes.

Among the potential candidates for the role, there’s British-American performer Andrew Garfield and American actor Oscar Isaac.

While British names in the mix include James Norton, Theo James, Idris Elba and Henry Cavill.

Brosnan commented on the Amazon acquisition, saying, “I had a feeling it might happen eventually, but I believe it was the best move for Barbara and Michael.

It requires significant bravery from them to relinquish control, but they will retain some influence over decisions; I fervently wish that Amazon treats both the task and their character with grace, creativity, and utmost respect.

In this swiftly-moving world, where changes occur as quickly as the flash of light, he noted, there’s often a tinge of sadness accompanying these transformations.

It comes after Brosnan addressed speculation about returning to the role of James Bond.

During a chat with GQ, while publicizing his new show ‘MobLand’, he was questioned about potentially reprising his Bond character in future films as an older version, following Amazon MGM Studios’ complete takeover of the franchise’s rights.

Pierce said about the deal: ‘I’ve heard of that.’

When asked about the possibility of reprising the role of Bond, he replied: “Naturally, wouldn’t I be intrigued?

It’s currently a sensitive matter. My suggestion would be to avoid stirring things up, as it seems wiser to let matters rest for now. It’s quite poetic to think that everything changes and eventually falls apart, but I believe it’s better left in someone else’s hands, particularly someone new.

For over three years now, there’s been a question mark over the direction of the James Bond series, ever since Daniel Craig hung up his tuxedo and retired from the role post the release of 2021’s No Time to Die.

For a while now, there has been much discussion among fans as to who might assume the character next, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s name keeps coming up in internet chatter regarding potential replacements.

On RTÉ Radio 1’s ‘The Ray D’Arcy Show’, Pierce commented that Aaron, at 34 years old, possesses the skills, ability, and charm needed to portray Bond, strongly believing so.

Additionally, he proposed that Academy Award-winning compatriot Cillian Murphy might be well-suited for the part as well.

There is currently no timeline for casting or releasing future James Bond films.

As an ardent James Bond fan, I couldn’t help but express my apprehensions when I heard the news about Amazon acquiring the complete rights to the 007 franchise. The fear that the legendary Bond films might follow the path of other iconic movie series has become palpable among fans on social media.

In the year 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm, the company that owns Star Wars, for approximately £3.2 billion. Since then, they’ve introduced numerous new films, TV shows, and animated spin-offs based on various origins.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity for beloved figures from the Bond universe, such as Q, the MI6 quartermaster who equips 007 with his innovative devices, Moneypenny, Bond’s dedicated secretary, and M, the head of MI6 and my superior, to have their own series. This expansion would undoubtedly enrich the Bond universe and offer fans a deeper dive into these captivating characters.

One fan, deeply saddened by the passing of 007, expressed his sentiments openly: ‘Rest In Peace, James Bond. Just as Disney has transformed Star Wars, Amazon may do the same to a beloved franchise.’

A different user named Mike Beauvais proposed that if Amazon were to acquire X, it might result in reduced quality assurance and a continuous flow of follow-ups or sequels.

He wrote: ‘We used to get a (generally) good James Bond movie, but that’s out of the window now.

Prepare yourself for the upcoming series, ‘Young Q’ and ’00 Origins: Trevelyan’. Unfortunately, it seems that less appealing Amazon Prime shows might follow these.

A different user named Joe Russo expressed a sense of melancholy about the passing of the last family-run film series to corporate management. It seems likely that Amazon MGM can hardly contain its excitement, however…

The cinematic universe of James Bond remains one of our last grand theatrical experiences. Avoid scattering it by creating numerous streaming adaptations, as this might lessen its impact.”

“Let’s keep the James Bond movies in theaters, not spread them out among many streaming services.
