Whatever Happened to the Spray ‘n’ Wipe Lady?
Australian actress Paula Duncan, who became a household name in Australia due to her memorable appearance in the Ajax Spray n’ Wipe commercial, recently discussed how that role could define her career.
The award-winning actress, now 72, has openly acknowledged that she’s reconciled with her fame stemming from the cleaning product ads, even though she boasts a rich career in movies and TV.
Duncan launched his five-decade-long entertainment career in the 1970s and has been featured in notable television shows like “Prisoner,” “Cop Shop,” and “Neighbors.
However, she’s most recognized for her position as the Australian representative of Ajax cleaning products from 1988 to 2010.
She admitted that this has sometimes been challenging to accept.
I can’t outlive Spray n’ Wipe. Regardless of what I’ve accomplished, it holds a special place in my heart. I recall the day in 1997 when I received the Order of Australia, an honor that means more to me than all my Logie awards,” Duncan told The Daily Telegraph.
I recall former New South Wales Governor, Marie Bashir, bestowing a medal upon me while offering her congratulations.
She mentioned that she appreciates me for my charitable efforts and industry contributions, but what sticks out to her the most is Spray n’ Wipe.
‘I could have cried that that was what I was remembered for the most.’
Duncan expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the visibility the commercial has provided her, mentioning that she continues to leverage this opportunity during auditions for fresh roles.
She mentioned, “That old chair in the living room is much like me. Everything else gets replaced or restored, but I seem to be the one left behind.
In 1980 and 1981, I had the privilege of being honored with the Silver Logie Award for Most Popular Actress, a recognition that came my way for my captivating role on the long-standing Channel Seven series, Cop Shop.
The actress who was born in New South Wales is almost universally recognized, and she appeared on Australian television sets extensively during the seventies and eighties.
She even received an award from the Queen and was given a ‘This is your Life’ tribute.

Among her accomplishments that she takes great pride in are contributing more than $9 million towards Paralympians and the Special Olympics, where she serves as a patron.
