The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s box office debut is looking to be as high as its stilettos.
Get ready for Devil Wears Prada 2, hitting theaters May 1st! This sequel to the popular 2006 film, based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, brings back director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna. Most of the original cast is returning too, including Meryl Streep as the demanding Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, and Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is expected to make around $66 million domestically over its first three days in theaters. This is more than twice the opening weekend earnings of the first Devil Wears Prada movie, which brought in $27.5 million. The original film ultimately earned $124.7 million domestically and $326.6 million worldwide.
Okay, so the original Devil Wears Prada made $27.5 million when it first came out. Now, if you adjust for inflation, that’s closer to $44.8 million today. But here’s the thing – early estimates are saying the sequel, coming out in 2026, is projected to open with over $20 million more than that adjusted original number. That’s a pretty big jump!
A $66 million opening weekend would put the movie among the top domestic debuts of 2026, trailing only Project Hail Mary ($80.5 million) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($131.7 million). Even just those first three days would earn it more domestically than several other 2026 films did throughout their entire release, including Send Help ($64.7 million), Reminders of Him ($46.3 million), Crime 101 ($36.6 million), Primate ($25.6 million), 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($25.1 million), and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come ($21 million).
While a strong opening weekend doesn’t guarantee a movie’s success, early numbers for The Devil Wears Prada 2 are promising. If the sequel follows a similar path to the first film, its significantly higher opening weekend suggests it could potentially gross up to $738.8 million in total.
The upcoming movie likely cost much more to make than the first one, which had a budget of around $40 million. Meryl Streep hinted at the increased spending during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, saying they “spent the money” on this sequel. Reports suggest the budget could reach $150 million, meaning the movie needs to earn around $375 million worldwide to break even – more than the original film earned in theaters (without accounting for inflation).
Whether “The Devil Wears Prada 2” succeeds will likely come down to how well audiences enjoy it and recommend it to others. The first movie received decent, but not amazing, scores from audiences – 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B from CinemaScore – so the sequel has a good opportunity to become even more popular through positive word-of-mouth.
