Peter Capaldi’s “painfully funny” British comedy gets new UK streaming home
Peter Capaldi’s acclaimed British comedy In the Loop has landed a new UK streaming home.
The 2009 movie serves as a sequel to the popular sitcom “The Thick of It,” featuring the return of Peter Capaldi, who plays the profane spin doctor Malcolm Tucker, now navigating Washington DC and attempting to control a UK minister after an embarrassing interview gaffe.
Following its debut on Amazon Prime Video last year, the film is now available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, having aired on BBC Four just last night.
The film “In the Loop” hails from the creative mind of director and co-writer Armando Iannucci, known for spearheading the original series “The Thick of It“, along with Jesse Amstrong, Simon Blackwell, and Tony Roche, who collectively penned the screenplay.
The film received massive praise upon its premiere, boasting a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. _The Hollywood Reporter_ deemed it a “bitingly humorous critique of the bureaucratic machinery of both Britain and America during the time preceding the Iraq War.
Rolling Stone stated that “In the Loop” demonstrates that intelligent and humorous elements can coexist within a single film, whereas The AV Club referred to it as relentlessly amusing.
In addition to Capaldi, the film boasts stars such as Tom Hollander from “The White Lotus”, James Gandolfini known for his role in “The Sopranos”, Gina McKee who was in “Notting Hill”, and Anna Chlumsky famous for her work in “Veep”. Moreover, Chris Addison, a familiar face from “The Thick of It”, reappears as well.
After portraying Tucker, Capaldi subsequently took on the role of the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who from 2014 to 2017. Last year, he discussed why acting as the Time Lord was “significantly more enjoyable” than playing himself.
I caught an interview with Tom Baker discussing various topics. He mentioned that during his tenure as The Doctor on ‘Doctor Who,’ he enjoyed doing a lot of public appearances and events, because playing The Doctor was far more exciting than being Tom Baker himself. I’d likely concur – acting as The Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’ is considerably more thrilling than being myself, according to his statement in the Radio Times.
In the Loop is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
