The popular ABC comedy The Middle finished its run in 2018 after nine seasons, but there was almost a spin-off series created to continue the story.
Actress Eden Sher recently shared that a spin-off series focusing on her character, Sue Heck, is being developed.
The project was unexpectedly cancelled when ABC underwent a major leadership change, and the executives who had supported the show were removed from their positions.
Sher, who is now 34 years old, discussed the spin-off show, called ‘Sue in the City,’ during an appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast.
‘It was set in Chicago and it was a few years in the future,’ she explained.
She discovered a dilapidated hotel in Chicago and decided to dedicate herself to restoring it, she explained.
‘And there’s this cast of characters and Chicago is a little bit of a character.’
She also mentioned that Brock Ciarlelli, who famously played her close friend Brad Bottig on The Middle, would be joining her in the spin-off series as a roommate.
She described the show as being about a woman named Sue adjusting to life in the city, saying it had a similar feel to ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ but was lighter in tone.
Beau Wirick, who played Sue’s husband Sean Donahue, was also set to pop up.
Sher said she thoroughly enjoyed filming the pilot episode and is optimistic it will be approved for a complete season.
She enjoyed the pilot, noting it wasn’t flawless, but definitely had promise – and many less impressive shows have been picked up for television. She felt it had a lot going for it.
Since the show The Middle finished, Sher has kept acting, including appearing in five episodes of Jane the Virgin in 2019.
She was last seen in the Hallmark Channel holiday film, A Keller Christmas Vacation.
The Middle, a show with 215 episodes, followed a working-class family in Indiana and their everyday challenges and experiences.
The show featured Patricia Heaton, well-known for her nine seasons on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
In December, The Middle star Pat Finn died at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer.
Finn was on The Middle from 2010 until 2018. He played the recurring character Bill Norwood.
Soon after the news broke, Heaton shared a loving tribute on Instagram.
The Hollywood veteran announced the passing of a wonderful and hilarious person, saying they had gone to be with Jesus.
Pat Finn, known to many as Bill Norwood from the show The Middle, sadly passed away after a multi-year battle with cancer. He was only 60 years old and is survived by his wife, Donna, and their three children.
Everyone who knew him loved him, and he’ll be remembered for his kindness, strong friendships, and hilarious sense of humor.
