Sorry We’re Closed
The game “Sorry We’re Closed” is quite peculiar and eccentric, even to the point of being absurdly unique. One could also describe it as utterly and brilliantly insane. It stands out distinctively – a survival horror game in retro style reminiscent of the polygon era and tank controls (though these tank controls are optional here), immersed in garish colors and oversized characters. In this world, angels and demons coexist secretly. As the spurned protagonist Michelle, with her vibrant green hair, you’re visited at night by The Duchess, an imposing figure who appears malevolent, pulling you into a bizarre underworld and demanding your love unconditionally. And it only gets more peculiar from there.>
Equipped with an extraordinary ‘Third Eye’ smack dab in the center of her forehead, Michelle has the ability to instantaneously switch between the mundane world we live in and the vivid demon realm hidden beneath layers of decay and disrepair that she casually overlooks. Many aspects of “Sorry We’re Closed” evoke a sense of the surreal and dreamlike, with its striking polygonal graphics depicting worn-down, haunting locations reminiscent of “Silent Hill“, along with an assortment of vibrant characters, many of whom mask their true identities as angels or demons.
Accompanied by your friend Robyn as your guide into a dilapidated London underground station that serves as a gateway to the demonic realm, your mission is to lift a curse. Along the way, you’ll encounter three other cursed individuals whose paths you must follow. As Michelle embarks on a quest to defeat these entities and claim their Third Eyes, she will accumulate the power necessary to confront The Duchess – she’s ominous, peculiar, and intimidating. Your interactions with these beings or your decision to bring an end to their rule will determine which of the game’s four conclusions you witness.
In the play “Sorry We’re Closed,” the atmosphere of discovery resembles that of a classic game like “Resident Evil.” The camera perspectives are stationary, so you must pay attention to audio clues to determine if something is hiding nearby. When you do come across a monster, switching your weapon to aim will change the viewpoint to first-person. To reveal their vulnerable heart-shaped spot, you’ll need to activate Michelle’s Third Eye. Initially, you’ll only have an axe at your disposal, which is sufficient for defeating rat demon-like creatures, but eventually, you’ll require stronger weapons.
Robyn will swiftly equip you with a pistol that growls like a dog upon reloading, making it easier for you to tackle some of the more powerful demons from the underworld. This pistol allows you to execute consecutive direct hit combos by targeting each enemy’s vulnerable points one after another. Activating the Third Eye just as a monster gets near temporarily stuns them, as they are enveloped in the light it emits in a circle surrounding Michelle’s feet, revealing the monstrous neon world hidden beneath the surface. Unfortunately, combat might be Sorry We’re Closed‘s one weak point due to the inconvenience of having to switch to a first-person view, which can be particularly tricky when dealing with numerous enemies.

The axe is best used for splitting wooden crates or obstacles, but it’s not ideal against stronger enemies. Instead, opt for using the pistol or shotgun, which require careful ammunition management, although there’s plenty of ammo when playing on normal difficulty. Death often occurs during frantic moments when adjusting the camera angle for a shot, or during tricky late-game puzzles that demand controlling both your character and her mirror image with reversed controls on different parts of the screen. When you’re low on health, a swig of water can help, but you can only carry a limited number of bottles in your inventory.
This issue is resolved through updates from T.A.D (Terrifying Anomalous Demon), which can be obtained by trading ‘yowzas’, earned by discovering and selling artifacts. You will then be able to carry additional water bottles, expand your ammo capacity, boost weapon damage, enhance the effectiveness of the Third Eye’s stun, among other benefits. Battling larger foes and bosses becomes significantly easier with stronger weapons, but Michelle’s secret weapon is the Heartbreak shot, which instantly kills ordinary enemies once the meter is filled, and is the sole method for defeating the game’s bosses – these are characters with their own tragic backstories, who have also been affected by the same curse that afflicts Michelle.

In essence, “Still, Sorry We’re Closed” is divided into two main aspects. One involves battling through dungeons and demons in quest missions, while the other revolves around social interactions where your choices can shape relationships and outcomes, for better or worse. The repercussions of your actions are usually clear-cut, so if you’re on the verge of causing harm, you’ll be fully aware of it. Interestingly, there’s a sense of dark pleasure in being a disruptive force, as seen with Darrel. The story unfolds in Michelle’s corner of London, which includes a roadwork-blocked street, a newsstand, a diner, a seedy bar, a clothing shop, a record store, and the convenience store where she earns her living, along with The Duchess’s hotel.
As a gamer, I found myself drawn into the world of “Sorry We’re Closed”. Although its combat might have some rough edges, it more than makes up for it as a gripping survival horror game and an engaging narrative. In this game, you find yourself navigating the intricate love lives of the locals in your London neighborhood. You don’t have to interfere, but I can’t help but get curious about their stories.
At its core, “Sorry We’re Closed” is a deep exploration of love in all its forms. The Duchess’s desperate pursuit of love is the central theme here, and it sets the tone for this unique and captivating adventure. Your decisions regarding The Duchess only serve to heighten the intrigue surrounding this game – a neon-lit survival horror unlike any other out there.
