Latest Xbox Insider Update is Causing Factory Reset on Consoles Removing User Profiles

It seems that individuals enrolled in the Xbox Insider program have encountered significant problems with the recent system upgrade, including instances where their Xbox gaming consoles seem to have been restored to their original factory settings after a 5GB update.

Users in the Xbox Insider program’s Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead levels usually get access to updates ahead of others for testing purposes. However, it’s unlikely they anticipated that a mandatory factory reset would result in their profiles being deleted from their consoles.

Initially offered as an optional download earlier this week, the new firmware has now become a mandatory update for Xbox Insiders. Consequently, Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Insiders have experienced their consoles going through the Xbox setup process, which typically occurs when you first turn on the console straight out of the box (as confirmed by VGC).

This is what the latest Xbox Insider update is supposed to do:

Profile

  • Fixed an issue where viewing your own profile would appear as if viewing another user’s profile unintentionally, offering none of the expected customization options.

TV & Display Options

  • Fixed an issue where the console would not correctly detect support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision for Gaming when connected to certain TV models, and playing Dolby Vision content would instead fall back to HDR10.

System

  • Various updates to properly reflect local languages across the console.

At time of writing, Xbox has yet to acknowledge the issue or provide a solution.
