A hidden-gem thriller film with a star-studded cast has landed on Netflix.
In 2011, the film titled “Retreat” marked the first directorial effort by Carl Tibbetts. It featured acting talents such as Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell, and Thandiwe Newton.
In simpler terms, this psychological thriller unfolds the narrative of architect Martin Kennedy (portrayed by Murphy) and his wife, journalist Kate (played by Newton). Their bond has been strained due to a heart-wrenching loss – a miscarriage that has left deep emotional scars on their relationship.
To mend their relationship, they decide to journey to Blackholme Island, located off the Scottish coast, owned by Doug (Jimmy Yuill). The island can only be reached by taking a ferry. Shortly after their arrival, a fellow named Jack (Bell) drifts up on the shore and warns them that an airborne illness is rapidly spreading across Europe, proving to be fatal.

After making its debut at the Fantasia Film Festival, I’ve noticed that Retreat had a restricted release in both the UK and US, but it didn’t get much attention – until now! Starting today, it’s available for streaming on Netflix.
62% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 40% of viewers, as per Popcornmeter, rate it positively.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: In my opinion, The Guardian labeled it as an engaging, nerve-wracking suspense film by a debutant director, offering a solid part to Jamie Bell.
Total Film commented: “The film is quite tense and unfortunately quite monotonously gloomy. It’s disappointing that Jason Isaacs and David Tennant weren’t able to appear together in the movie as initially intended.

The London Evening Standard commented, “This film is skillfully made and directed, narrating a confined story that gradually transforms from a suspenseful thriller into a chilling horror. As long as you’re willing to stretch your imagination, it should hold your attention throughout.
To HeyUGuys, 28 Days Later‘s actor Murphy explained his fascination with the movie: “Actors are drawn to tense, dramatic productions like this one because they delve deeply into the psyche and development of characters.
The interplay among the three characters is what makes “Retreat” particularly captivating for any performer.
Retreat is available to stream now on Netflix.
