I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this old photo of Ricky Gervais! He looks totally different – it’s from back in the 80s when he was trying his hand at a pop career, and he’s wearing this amazing white jumpsuit with a belt. Seriously, it’s a side of him I’ve never seen before!
At age 64, the comedian first tried to make it in the music charts back in 1983, while he was still a student at University College London. He teamed up with his friend Bill Macrae to form a new wave music duo called Seona Dancing.
The band signed with London Records and put out two singles, “More To Lose” and “Bitter Heart,” but unfortunately, neither song charted in the UK.
A vintage photo of Ricky is now circulating online, showing him as a young man with long dark hair, performing in a striking outfit.
You know, I was just reminiscing about early performances, and it reminded me of Ricky! He was only 22 when he and his partner actually got on TV – they did a spot on the British show Razzmatazz, which is pretty rare, as it turned out to be one of the few times they ever performed on television.
People were quick to comment on his new appearance, with one person comparing his style to the bands Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet.
It’s amazing how cool Ricky Gervais was even back in the eighties! I already adore him, but this just makes me love him more. It never fails to make me laugh and appreciate him.
‘Wow didn’t know Ricky could sing’; ‘No way is that him’; ‘I didn’t know he was a singer.’
Although Ricky didn’t find much success as a musician, he became widely known a few years later in 2001 with his hit BBC television show, The Office, which was presented as a documentary.
Ricky explained that his musical background always influences his TV work. He sees any opportunity as a way to express his creativity, even though he considers himself a musician who never quite made it.
Oh my god, David Brent! He’s everything. And it’s not just the show, you know? Ricky Gervais actually did a whole movie about David’s disastrous music career! Like, a full-on mockumentary following him trying – and spectacularly failing – to become a rock star. It’s brilliant, honestly, just seeing how far he’ll go… or rather, won’t go. It’s peak David Brent, and I’ve watched it countless times!
In 2006, David Bowie made a memorable guest appearance on Ricky Gervais’ show, Extras, and unexpectedly performed a song written by Ricky himself.
During a 2016 interview on the Graham Norton Show, he revealed he always tries to include a song in his projects. He mentioned writing a song for The Simpsons and collaborating with David Bowie on a song for the show Extras, jokingly referring to himself as a musician who never quite made it.
Graham showed a promotional photo from his time with Seona Dancing, explaining that he felt shy because of how he looks now.
You know, someone brought up an old photo of me doing this dance – it’s called the Seona Dancing, apparently! Honestly, I’m not even phased by the picture itself. What does make me cringe is looking at myself now! People are asking what happened to me, and I’ll tell you the truth: a lot of pizza happened. I’ve definitely embraced enjoying life a little too much, and it shows!
Despite struggling to gain traction in music recently, he previously achieved a major milestone by winning the first-ever Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The British comedian had said he didn’t think he would win, but he ended up beating out Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes to take the prize.
Ricky wasn’t at the Beverly Hills ceremony, so comedian Jim Gaffigan accepted the award for his Netflix special, Armageddon, instead.
