NBC Names Anchor to Replace Lester Holt on ‘Nightly News’

In a move announced on Wednesday, NBC News has selected Tom Llamas to succeed Lester Holt as the host of “Nightly News,” effective this summer. However, it’s important to note that he will continue to host his streaming news program as well.

45-year-old Llamas was broadly expected to ascend to his new role. Since moving from ABC to NBC in 2021, he has served as Holt’s understudy on the evening news recap. Additionally, he serves as the primary anchor for NBC News Now’s streaming service, hosting the one-hour “Top Story” program.

Last week, Holt announced his decision to leave “Nightly News” after a ten-year run. However, he intends to continue working for the same network on “Dateline NBC.

Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News’ executive vice president of programming, remarked that Tom embodies the exceptional journalism, heartfelt narration, and unwavering honesty which have always been distinctive features of NBC Nightly News.

As a seasoned movie critic, I find myself in awe of ABC’s David Muir, who has maintained his position as the longest-serving evening news anchor on “World News Tonight” and reigns supreme in ratings. In a surprising move earlier this year, CBS News opted to replace Norah O’Donnell with a dynamic duo, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois.

Although the world of news has significantly changed from when Walter Cronkite was broadcast to millions during dinner time, the combined viewership of ABC, CBS, and NBC newscasts exceeds 10 million people every evening. These anchors are often seen as the public face representing the broadcast news divisions.

Initially, llamas will assume the position, continuing to work on the streaming service. His “Prime Time” news broadcasts will commence every weekday evening following the conclusion of “Nightly News”.
