Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt as anchor of ‘NBC Nightly News’

In simple terms, Tom Llamas is set to take over as the anchor for “NBC Nightly News” following Lester Holt’s departure from that position this summer.

Born to Cuban parents, Llamas, aged 45, is set to become the inaugural Latino anchor for a weekday English-language broadcast network news program. This position will elevate him as one of the prominent figures within NBC News.

Llamas, a 45-year-old son of Cuban immigrants, will soon be the first to hold the role of anchoring a weekday English language broadcast network evening newscast. With this assignment, he’ll join the ranks of notable personalities at NBC News.

Llamas will continue as the central figure in the evening news broadcast “Top Story,” airing on NBC News Now at 7 PM Eastern. This program, titled “Nightly,” is simultaneously aired live to NBC stations at 6:30 PM Eastern.

Last week, I shared my intentions to step down from “Nightly” after a decade-long journey. However, I’m delighted to continue my association with NBC News, anchoring their true crime newsmagazine, “Dateline.

Originally hailing from Miami, Llamas has earned favor from NBC News Group Chairman Cesar Conde. Previously working at ABC, Llamas has been speculated as a potential successor for the “Nightly” position ever since joining NBC News.

15-year-old llamas began his career in journalism as an intern at the local Telemundo station in Miami. Following his graduation from Loyola University New Orleans, he secured a job in 2000 as a production assistant at NBC News. Over time, he advanced to become a correspondent for NBC’s Miami station and a local news anchor for WNBC in New York.

In 2014, Llamas moved to ABC News. There, he increased his visibility by reporting on the 2016 presidential race, and the following year, he was appointed as the Saturday host for “ABC World News.” He then rejoined NBC in 2021 and took over as the anchor of “Top Story” in September of that same year.
