The Vipp Tunnel Is an Off-Grid Architectural Retreat on Tasmania’s Bruny Island

Danish design label Vipp proceeds with its worldwide growth by presenting its newest lodging, called Vipp Tunnel, situated on the wild Bruny Island in Tasmania, Australia. This architectural marvel, designed by Room11 studio based in Hobart, combines nature, art, and architecture seamlessly. Situated above the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, it provides a breathtaking 280-degree panorama of the ocean and surrounding scenery.

This 30-meter structure made from concrete harmoniously blends with its surroundings, striking a balance between brutalist architecture and the surrounding natural beauty. Inside, the Vipp V3 kitchen in all aluminum serves as the central focus of the living area, complemented by Vipp Swivel chairs adorned in Australian sheepskin. This creates a sophisticated contrast against the building’s rugged exterior. Danish artist Lin Utzon, whose father designed the Sydney Opera House, adds to the space with her “Cosmic Dancers” sculptures, which are strategically positioned among the local red gum trees, fostering a bond between art and nature.

Additionally, the Vipp Tunnel serves as a symbol of sustainability, boasting a complete solar-powered exterior that makes it self-sufficient in terms of energy and independent from the grid. The architectural design takes great care to minimize its environmental footprint by constructing thoughtfully so as to protect the island’s indigenous flora.

Now accepting reservations from $970 AUD per night on the Vipp Tunnel site, this guesthouse provides a distinctive, off-the-grid escape that harmoniously blends architecture, design, and nature in one of the planet’s most secluded spots.
