Bobby Hundreds Steps Down as Creative Director of The Hundreds

Not long after disclosing the shutdown of The Hundreds’ iconic store on Fairfax Avenue, its co-creator Bobby Hundreds (Bobby Kim) unveiled his intention to relinquish his position as the brand’s creative director.

In an interview with GQ, Kim announced that David Rivera will be assuming the role, stating, “From now on, I’ll be relinquishing my creative control and supervision over The Hundreds’ aesthetic.” He revealed that Rivera, who has been a devoted fan of the brand since its inception, started at The Hundreds as a photo assistant and climbed the ranks to become an accessories designer, then an apparel designer. Over the past few years, he has held various design roles and ultimately reached the position of creative director, where Kim has entrusted him with the brand for some time now.

Kim expresses that stepping down is “the most beneficial move for the brand right now,” drawing a parallel to Souls of Mischief’s lyric “MCs should know their limitations” as a reminder. He admits, “I recognize my limitations.” While he believes he has a good grasp on design and street fashion, he acknowledges that David is currently better suited to lead The Hundreds. Accepting this was a very humbling experience for him.

Given my perspective, we’d continue operating our store on Fairfax and Rosewood. However, that location doesn’t seem to align with current streetwear trends or The Hundreds’ audience anymore. Kim says, however, “I still want to be a part of it, and I want to be enjoying the ride.”

Last week, The Hundreds bid farewell to its flagship store on Fairfax Avenue, signaling the conclusion of an epoch. In a heartfelt message, Kim expressed, “We experienced a rich life here. We constructed it, and countless people flocked to us, spanning various generations. There’s no denying that we completed what we set out to do.” Reflecting on Fairfax Avenue, Kim stated, “This area offered fertile ground for The Hundreds and a crop of streetwear brands to establish their roots. Sometimes I feel like we were fashion pioneers who entered the scene just before Napster and streaming. Our ability to grow organically was made possible by this neighborhood and the visionaries it attracted.
