Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero star responds to “very toxic, twisted” show moment
As a dedicated fan of “Towards Zero,” I’ve been intrigued by the insights shared by Ella Lily Hyland, who plays a pivotal role in the series. She’s shed light on the complex and challenging dynamic between the main characters, describing it as both ‘toxic’ and ‘twisted.’ It’s fascinating to see this darker side of their relationship unfold, making the show even more captivating!
As an enthusiast, I can’t help but express my fascination for the captivating BBC series that reimagines Agatha Christie’s 1944 novel. In this gripping tale, I find myself immersed in the life of a celebrated tennis star navigating a tumultuous divorce. In an unusual twist, he invites his ex-spouse and new companion to a tranquil seaside sanctuary. The plot thickens as a chilling murder unfolds, casting suspicion on numerous individuals.
Apart from the central enigma, there’s also a complex love situation involving Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), his former spouse Audrey (Hyland), and his current wife Kay (Mimi Keene). Hyland referred to this relationship dynamic as “draining” in an interview with RadioTimes.
The actor mentioned that Audrey relocated to Gull’s Point during her childhood years, as she was an orphan. From their very early days, Audrey and Nevile shared a bond akin to siblings, which eventually evolved into a romantic relationship.
We encounter Audrey following her decision to file for divorce from her husband Nevile. Clearly, she has been victimized by their union. It seems that she is seeking liberation as their relationship was marked by toxicity, complexity, and emotional drain.
They have shared their childhood years, forming a strong bond that leans heavily on mutual reliance. This connection seems somewhat reminiscent of childhood dynamics. It’s possible that certain developmental aspects were hindered during their upbringing – perhaps they often engaged in playing out fantasy roles like lords and ladies of a manor.
Since Nevile and Audrey have a past together, Hyland, fresh off his role in Netflix’s “Black Doves,” elaborated that the back-and-forth of their relationship originated from their mutual compulsion to “outdo” each other. He characterized this persistent drive as “never-ending.
She remarked, “On the surface, it appears quite refined, yet beneath lies an immature demand.” They understand one another so profoundly that they often attempt to guess each other’s next action, which is a significant aspect of their closeness.
They lack personal limits, a trait that was never taught to them during their childhood, which can be risky in adulthood since they’re unaware of when to halt. Their intense desire to triumph and outdo one another, or even to outdo themselves in relation to each other, is what ultimately leads to their estrangement, creating a dynamic of both attraction and repulsion.
Towards Zero airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
