‘Most fun I ever had’: Jimmy Johnson retires after three decades as Fox NFL analyst

After over three decades since his initial transition from the NFL sidelines to a television studio, Jimmy Johnson has decided to retire from his extended position as an analyst on “Fox NFL Sunday.

On Monday morning, it was announced by the 81-year-old Johnson while he was a guest on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.

Johnson stated that the most enjoyable experience of his career, even surpassing Super Bowl victories and national championships, occurred at Fox Sports. He enjoys himself immensely while working alongside his friends on the set – the best friends he’s ever made – at Fox.

However, after much consideration over the past four or five years, I have chosen to step away from Fox. This decision hasn’t been easy, and I will surely miss the camaraderie of my colleagues. I hope to run into them occasionally. It’s been an incredible journey that began 31 years ago.

We love you, Coach. Congratulations on an amazing career.

Fox Sports NFL declined to give a prompt response regarding possible substitutes for Johnson at the moment.

Johnson played as a defensive lineman at the University of Arkansas, contributing significantly to their national championship win in 1964. Later, he was recognized by being included in the school’s all-decade team for the 1960s, and he was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

Following his graduation from college, Johnson embarked on a career in coaching. His debut as a head coach was at Oklahoma State, where he served from 1979 to 1983. Subsequently, he shifted to the University of Miami and guided the Hurricanes to win the national championship in 1987.

In 1989, Johnson was offered the Dallas Cowboys position by their owner Jerry Jones, who had been a teammate from their national championship days at Arkansas many years prior. After they defeated San Francisco in the NFC championship game on January 17, 1993, Johnson cemented his place in team history with one of the most famous rhetorical questions in NFL history: “How about those Cowboys?

Rams

Coach Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams emphasized that they didn’t come near trading quarterback Matthew Stafford, yet he admitted that parting ways with wide receiver Cooper Kupp has proven challenging.

Following his successive Super Bowl wins with Dallas in 1993 and 1994, Johnson decided to part company with Jones and the Cowboys after their second triumph in 1994. One of the original hires for the burgeoning “Fox NFL Sunday” studio program in 1994 was Johnson, along with current analysts Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long. He left the show in 1996 to take on the role as head coach of the Miami Dolphins but returned to the program in 2002.

31 years ago, Jimmy Johnson first appeared on Fox NFL Sunday, and he has since been a valued part of our Fox Sports family.
