HBO’s upcoming series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is already the biggest streaming event of 2026, but it’s not the only magical show coming this holiday season. Ever since the first trailer dropped on March 25th, excitement has been incredibly high for this new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s popular first book. The trailer offered a first glimpse of locations like Diagon Alley and introduced the actors playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione. It quickly broke HBO’s viewing records, reaching 277 million views in just 48 hours, and signaled that the first season of Potter will be a much darker take on Hogwarts – even if some fans aren’t expecting it.
Even though the trailer was well-received, many fans are still hesitant about the new Harry Potter series. Some feel it’s too soon after the last movie, released just 15 years ago, to revisit the world. Others are uncomfortable supporting the series because of the creator’s publicly known transphobic views, despite criticism from many fans. With the first episode of the series now scheduled to premiere on December 25th, it’s giving former fans an alternative epic fantasy event to watch. In fact, HBO’s choice to release the series on Christmas Day is already being compared to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon of 2023, and it’s expected to be a major cultural moment.
HBO’s ‘Potter’ and Netflix’s ‘Narnia’ Just Became 2026’s ‘Barbenheimer’

HBO unexpectedly turned Christmas into the biggest day for streaming, thanks to a scheduling coincidence. Greta Gerwig’s first film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, titled The Magician’s Nephew, was already planned for a December 25th release after a limited IMAX theatrical run starting November 26th. Now, with the first episode of a new Harry Potterrelated series also debuting on Christmas Day, HBO and Netflix have unintentionally created a situation similar to the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon of 2023. Gerwig is familiar with this kind of success, as her film Barbie was one half of that blockbuster pairing. The other half was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer*, which won seven Oscars, including awards for Best Picture, Directing, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.).
When two very different fantasy movies were released around the same time, people started watching them back-to-back, creating a huge trend and becoming the biggest thing online in 2023. While Harry Potter is launching a TV series and The Chronicles of Narnia plans to release seven films, the excitement is similar. Both are fantasy stories, but unique in their approach – Harry Potter follows the main character learning magic and battling Voldemort, while Narnia is more of a classic fairytale with Christian influences. Both projects are highly anticipated, but one might already have a stronger fanbase. The big question is, which one will be more successful?
‘Potter’ vs. ‘Narnia’: Who Will Reign Supreme?
Both the upcoming Narnia and Harry Potter films have strengths that could make one more successful than the other. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was a massive hit, earning over $1 billion worldwide, so her fans are eager to see what she does with Narnia. They’re especially excited given the quality of her previous films, Little Women and Lady Bird. Narnia also has a built-in audience within the Christian community and is a story many parents will feel comfortable letting their children watch because of its clear morals and religious symbolism. Rumors that Meryl Streep might voice Aslan could also attract a wider adult audience. All of these factors suggest Narnia could be the more popular of the two projects.
The new Harry Potter series is already facing significant challenges. Some fans are disappointed by the show’s darker direction, and many are unwilling to support it due to J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues. Others feel it’s too soon after the original films for a reboot. Several actors, including Nicola Coughlan and Andrew Garfield, reportedly don’t want to be involved due to their association with Rowling. Most disturbingly, Paapa Essiedu, who is playing Severus Snape, has received death threats and been targeted with racist content online – including GIFs, memes, and AI-generated videos – adding even more negativity to an already troubled production.

Even now, Harry Potter remains incredibly popular worldwide. The books have sold over 600 million copies, and the movies were huge hits, earning billions of dollars. The video game, Hogwarts Legacy, was also a massive success, becoming the best-selling game of 2023 with over 22 million copies sold – and it continues to sell well. If you visit a Barnes & Noble in the US, you’ll find an entire section dedicated to Harry Potter, filled with not just books, but all kinds of merchandise like stickers, water bottles, journals, and stuffed animals. No other book series enjoys this level of ongoing popularity, proving that Harry Potter’s magic is still going strong and doesn’t appear to be fading anytime soon.
It’s highly probable that the Harry Potter series will be the biggest hit this Christmas among streaming shows. Even people who aren’t necessarily eager for another adaptation will likely be curious to see HBO’s take on the story, leading to huge viewership numbers. While The Chronicles of Narnia is popular, it doesn’t have the same widespread appeal as Harry Potter, even with a director as talented as Greta Gerwig. Narnia will likely perform very well, and some viewers might enjoy both it and Potter like they did with Barbie and Oppenheimer. However, Harry Potter is more likely to be considered the “winner,” given its enduring popularity with readers and moviegoers across generations.
