At the 2025 Oscars, it was Demi Moore who felt deeply disappointed when Mikey Madison was announced as the winner for Best Actress, a night where Anora swept the awards with an impressive five wins, including Best Picture.

Demi looked tense, gripping her jaw tightly, as she didn’t get announced, yet she managed a quiet “Nice” while giving a round of applause for Mikey’s grand victory.

It came as quite a shock that Demi triumphed, given she’d already won the actress award for her performance in The Substance at many significant events leading up to the Oscars.

In the indie movie Anora, where Sean Baker was awarded Best Director for his work, Mikey convincingly plays the role of an escort. During her heartfelt acceptance speech, she paid tribute to the community of sex workers.

The movie bagged the Best Picture Award at the end of the night, surpassing films like The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, The Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked.

In a turn of events, Anora’s screenwriter and director, Sean Baker, received recognition with three prestigious awards: Best Original Screenplay, Excellence in Film Editing, and the highly sought-after Best Director accolade.

The story revolves around a young escort named Ani (portrayed by Mikey), who hails from Brooklyn. She unexpectedly ties the knot with the son of a wealthy Russian businessman. However, when this news spreads in Russia, their blissful union encounters trouble as his parents journey to New York with the intention of annulling their marriage.

 Adrien Brody took home his second ever Best Actor award earlier in the night.

The 51-year-old actor paused the background music when he was acknowledged for his performance in The Brutalist.

Among strong competition featuring Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown”, Colman Domingo in “Sing Sing”, Ralph Fiennes in “Conclave”, and Sebastian Stan in “The Apprentice”, he emerged victorious.

Adrian previously won Best Actor for his work on classic film The Piano back in 2003. 

Zoe Saldaña quelled the uproar over her movie, Emilia Pérez, by winning the Best Supporting Actress award.

The show hit a high note as the 46-year-old American actress was crowned for the Netflix film.

Monica Barbaro, Ariana Grande, Felicity Jones, and Isabella Rossellini all emerged victorious in their respective roles: Monica Barbaro in “A Complete Unknown”, Ariana Grande in “Wicked”, Felicity Jones in “The Brutalist”, and Isabella Rossellini in “Conclave”.

Zoe was the very first Oscar-winning actress of Dominican heritage, taking care to acknowledge her ancestors for their role in clearing the path towards a thriving acting career in the United States.

Emilia Perez found herself under scrutiny due to offensive, racially charged and Islamophobic posts made by her co-star Karla Sofia Gascon, which were uncovered more recently.

Netflix took the step of no longer providing travel coverage for Gascón at award ceremonies, yet she still attended the Oscars.

The award show started out in fine form as Kieran Culkin took home the first award of the night.

The event began when the 42-year-old actor won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain.

In a historic win, Paul Tazewell, the costume designer for the hit musical “Wicked”, made headlines by becoming the first Black man to receive an award for Achievement in Costume Design.

      

As a devoted admirer, I proudly weathered the storm of debate around the movie “Emilia Pérez,” ultimately finding myself cheering as Zoe Saldaña was awarded Best Supporting Actress.
