Jeremy Strong’s Solemn Face: The Shocking Oscar Snub by Succession Co-star Kieran Culkin!
At the glitzy awards event on Sunday, Jeremy Strong seemed downhearted when it was Kieran Culkin who took home the Oscar, not him.
At the 97th Academy Awards, the 46-year-old actor found himself competing with his fellow Succession cast member and screen brother in the category for Best Supporting Actor.
Upon hearing that Culkin, aged 42, had won for his acting in Jesse Eisenberg’s drama “A Real Pain,” I couldn’t help but subtly register a reaction across my features.
Despite his ex-colleague acknowledging him in their acceptance speech, Strong appeared disheartened by the defeat.
However, the moment was brief as he applauded his former co-star’s major win.
During the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Culkin was recognized for his exceptional performance. Upon ascending the stage to accept the Oscar, he addressed Strong personally.

Strong received a nod in the same category for his performance as Roy Cohn in The Apprentice.
During his speech, Culkin acknowledged that what he was about to say was true: Jeremy is outstanding on The Apprentice. This comment was a nod to Robert Downey Jr.’s compliments regarding Strong’s performance in the movie inspired by Donald Trump.
He expressed his admiration, saying, “Your work is fantastic! I normally can’t pick favorites, as it might seem biased, but yours was exceptional.
Then, Culkin thanked his manager, his costar and director Eisenberg and his wife Jazz Charton.
Prior to receiving their initial Oscar nominations, Macaulay Culkin and Eric Stonestreet were already portraying the roles of brothers Roman and Kendall on screen.

Before their first Oscar nods came in, Macaulay Culkin and Eric Stonestreet had already acted as the Roy siblings, Roman and Kendall respectively.

The pair starred alongside one another for four seasons of the HBO series from 2018 to 2023.

At the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the 97th Academy Awards will be celebrating the top movies from 2024, with a glittering event taking place there.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to step into the role of Oscars host for the first time at age 61. The opportunity came my way when I playfully said I would host just to secure an invite. Now, here I am, eagerly looking forward to the event!
2021’s award ceremony presents a particularly unpredictable landscape for several prominent categories such as Best Picture and the majority of acting nominations, leaving spectators in suspense.
This year, Emilia Pérez heads the list of nominations, boasting a total of 13, including nods for Best Picture, Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Director (Jacques Audiard), Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song.
The main character, once a notorious Mexican drug lord, is now portrayed by Gascón. This individual undergoes a transformation, revealing herself as a transgender woman and orchestrating her own demise to create a fresh identity as a positive influence in society. On the other hand, Saldaña takes on the role of a lawyer with questionable morals, who assists in establishing the new persona for our protagonist.
In the end, The Brutalist secured the runner-up spot with a total of 10 nominations across various categories. Among these were nods for Best Picture, Best Director (for Brady Corbet), Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Original Screenplay.

In a historical drama, Brody portrays László Tóth, a Hungarian architect of Jewish descent who emigrates to America following the Holocaust. The story unfolds as László strives to fulfill his artistic aspirations despite facing opposition from his affluent patron (Pearce), whose trivial demands pose challenges along the way.
In the competition, Wicked earned a total of 10 nominations across various categories. Among these are recognition for Best Picture, Actress (for Cynthia Erivo), and Supporting Actress (for Ariana Grande).
The hit musical under consideration is actually a prequel adaptation based on just the initial part of the original musical with the same title. It introduces a revamped backstory to “The Wizard of Oz,” featuring Erivo portraying Elphaba, eventually known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Grande playing Galinda Upland, who later transforms into Glinda the Good.
Among the other contenders for the top picture nominations, you’ll find me closely following the works of Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance. Each one is unique in its own right and I eagerly anticipate their unfolding stories.
At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are closely followed as an indicator of Oscar success, there was a significant development in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role only a week before the Oscars. Surprisingly, Timothée Chalamet won for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” shaking up the race.
Leading up to that victory, it appeared Brody was the front-runner following his wins at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Movie Awards for Best Actor.
Ralph Fiennes persistently maintains his position as a strong contender for his part as a British Cardinal, who is battling tirelessly to prevent a clandestine papal election from spiraling into conflict and mystery.
The highly praised movie has garnered several acting victories for Fiennes at smaller events and gatherings, in addition to numerous ensemble acting awards. Notably, Fiennes has accepted these accolades on multiple occasions.

In the competition, those top three contenders are facing off against Colman Domingo and Sebastian Stan, who both delivered remarkable performances – Colman Domingo as Sing Sing’s character, and Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump on The Apprentice.
In the “Best Actress” category, there isn’t a standout favorite yet. Demi Moore has been highly praised for her compelling return to acting in the satirical body-horror film “The Substance.” This performance earned her the Best Actress accolades from both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, as well as recognition from various critics’ groups.
Winning at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards a week prior to the Oscars implies that she might be in an advantageous position to win the Oscar, considering this is her first nomination.
Mikey Madison, portraying an impulsive adult dancer who unexpectedly weds the son of a Russian billionaire, received widespread praise and recognition from various critic groups at the start of the season.
After winning the BAFTA for best lead actress, her chances of success noticeably improved. This was further solidified when she received an Independent Spirit Award in the non-binary lead performance category.
Initially, Emilia Pérez stood as a strong contender for the award, but her chances dwindled significantly following the resurfacing and translation of old, offensive tweets containing racist and Islamophobic remarks. These previously unnoticed posts sparked widespread criticism when they were translated into English and brought to public attention.
Following the revelation of her controversial posts, Gascón has been absent from award ceremonies since then. Despite some insincere apologies, it is said that Netflix no longer covers her travel and accommodation expenses for these events. However, a source close to her mentioned that she still intends to attend the Oscars.
Prior to the debate, her nomination was considered groundbreaking because she became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category.

Among the other contenders are Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in Wicked, who hasn’t won any significant awards yet, and Fernanda Torres, the actress from the historical drama I’m Still Here. However, Torres faced controversy recently when a video clip from a 17-year-old comedy sketch on Brazilian TV emerged in January, showing her wearing blackface.
In the category of Best Supporting Actress, the nominees are: Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini for Conclave, and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.
Monica Barbaro in A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande in Wicked, Felicity Jones in The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini in Conclave, and Zoe Saldaña in Emilia Pérez.
It seems that Saldaña has become the front-runner following a series of victories at the Golden Globes, British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) and Critics’ Choice Awards.
In my expert opinion, certain awards given earlier in the process didn’t take into account the growing controversy surrounding Gascón, which might have impacted the voting decisions of those who developed a negative impression of Emilia Pérez due to this issue.
In simpler terms, it appears that the role of a supporting actor is the most likely to be predicted correctly, given Kieran Culkin’s consistent victories for his performance in “A Real Pain,” making him the clear front-runner.
Additional candidates in the running are Yura Borisov for Anora, Edward Norton for A Complete Stranger, Guy Pearce for The Harsh Architecture, and Jeremy Strong for The Mentor.
Initially, Emilia Pérez appeared to be the frontrunner among the nominated pictures. However, Gascon’s controversial posts may jeopardize her chances of winning.
Anora, the film that won the Palme d’Or, saw a late surge in support after it received awards for Best Picture at both the Directors Guild of America Awards and the Producers Guild of America Awards. These two accolades are often seen as strong indicators of Oscar success by experts following the awards season. Additionally, its victory at the Independent Spirit Awards added to its momentum.

It appears that the category for best director is shaping up as a tight competition among three contenders: Sean Baker (from Anora), Brady Corbet (director of The Brutalist), and Jacques Audiard, who directed Emilia Pérez.
2021’s original song category showcases two tunes by Emilia Pérez – El Mal and Mi Camino, along with the new Elton John track Never Too Late, featured in its eponymous documentary, Like a Bird from Sing Sing, and Diane Warren’s most recent composition titled The Journey.
The Academy Awards ceremony starts at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) or 4 p.m. Pacific Time (PT). You can catch it live on ABC television network, and for the very first time, on the streaming platform, Hulu.
Those with a premium subscription to services such as Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV can also tune in to watch the event live.
