Ariana Grande’s Subtle Signals: Avoiding PDA with Ethan Slater at the Oscars

At the 2025 Oscars, it appeared that Ariana Grande kept a distance from public displays of affection with Ethan Slater. Instead, she seemed to devote her attention more towards her mother throughout the event.

In a clip shared by E! News and uploaded on X, the pair were spotted having a conversation side by side. As Grande guides her mother, Joan, by the hand, she gradually moves away from Slater.

According to Patti Wood, a specialist in body language, their seemingly cold interaction may be hiding something deeper.

Wood shared with DailyMail.com on an exclusive basis that it’s evident Grande desires to be out of a close-up image featuring the two of them.

‘She moves away to avoid standing next to them and takes hold of her mother’s arm as if seeking comfort, giving her the appearance of a small child,’ Wood explained further.

‘She even brings her right hand and arm, which are holding her purse, behind her!’

At one moment, the body language analyst observed that the actress from “Wicked” appeared to draw her mom closer to herself and Slater.

However, Slater seemed to ignore all of these signs, as he continued to talk to her. 

‘He is ignoring her body language, but clearly because he is a smitten fan,’ Wood said.

It was quite noticeable that Ariana Grande’s discomfort with public displays of affection (PDA) extended to her choice of clothing as well.

Ariana Grande, the artist behind the smash hit “Thank U, Next,” donned an eye-catching, pastel pink Schiaparelli ballgown featuring a fitted corset top and a voluminous, sparkling tulle skirt that expanded dramatically.

The sizeable shape of the dress almost looked like that of a cake topper.  

In conversation with DailyMail.com, Wood remarked that she found her unique attire captivating. It was designed to shield her hips, a sensitive body area, and kept others at a distance.

She mentioned that Grande’s appearance seemed similar to the striking hat worn by Melania Trump during President Carter’s winter funeral, which was quite dramatic.

To note, they didn’t stroll the red carpet side by side on Sunday. Instead, they arrived separately, approximately an hour apart.

Slater and Grande have been together since the summer of 2023, but rumors surfaced suggesting their romantic connection began much earlier. It’s said they grew particularly close during filming of Wicked.

Previously, Grande was wedded to Dalton Gomez, while Slater is married to Lilly Jay, and they have a two-year-old child together.

Grande had been married to Dalton Gomez, whereas Slater tied the knot with Lilly Jay, whom he has a two-year-old son with.

Jay had moved to London, where Slater was filming Wicked, with their newborn at the time.

In an article published by The Cut last December, Slater’s former spouse shared insights about her journey as a solo parent and the conclusion of their over ten-year partnership.

‘Motherhood, I have learned, fills your time but not your mind,’ she wrote.

During the numerous hours I soothe my baby to sleep by rocking him, taking walks with his pram, and admiring his tiny hands clutching a crayon, I tirelessly pursue my personal endeavor of coming to terms with the unexpected collapse of my marriage in the public eye.
