Watch Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reunite for sensational Wicked performance to open the 2025 Oscars
From the moment the announcement was made, we had a feeling that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande‘s performance at this year’s Oscars would be exceptional, and indeed, it turned out to be one of the standout moments.
As a gamer, I found myself transported to another world when the stars aligned for an unforgettable rendition of Wicked that kicked off this year’s ceremony. The show began with a nostalgic nod to Dorothy clicking her ruby slippers, followed by a dazzling reel of past Oscar winners, culminating in the words “We Love LA” illuminated across the sky.
Later, Grandé stepped onto the stage performing an enchanting rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’. Afterward, Erivo gracefully joined, offering a captivating cover of ‘Home’ originally sung by Diana Ross.
Or simply:
Grande sang ‘Over the Rainbow’, followed by Erivo with ‘Home’ by Diana Ross. Both performances were on stage.
At long last, the eagerly anticipated instant arrived when Grande and Erivo joined forces once more to perform “Defying Gravity”, accompanied by a grand orchestra.
This year, both stars have been nominated for an Oscar. Specifically, Cynthia Erivo has been nominated in the lead actress category, while Ariana Grande is up for a nomination in the supporting actress category.
In an unexpected twist, neither contender appears likely to take the top prize. However, it’s possible that a surprise winner could emerge during the ceremony. The Best Supporting Actress will be announced around halfway through the event, while the Best Actress award is traditionally presented as the second-to-last honor of the night.
It seems like you’re in for a spell of time as we find out if Erivo could make history by being the youngest artist to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
If you’re in the US, you can watch the entire performance here.
You’ve got eight months left before “Wicked: For Good” hits theaters, but if you’re in the United States, you can start streaming “Wicked” as often as you wish starting March 21st, as it will be available on Peacock.
The long-anticipated follow-up is set to expand Dorothy’s part, and there’s buzz that Alisha Weir has addressed the possibility of her involvement.
She clarified, “When I came across that rumor, I found it utterly unbelievable and it quickly spiraled out of control on various social platforms.
That sounds fantastic! I’m a huge fan of ‘Wicked’, and I watched the initial one with my family. I also admire Jon Chu’s work, as well as Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. If they were involved in something together, that would be quite exciting.
Wicked is available to buy or rent from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and more in the UK.
