A live-action Legend of Zelda movie is in the works, a project fans have been eager to see for years. However, Takaya Imamura, an art director on the 2000 game The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he hopes the film’s version of Link won’t have too much dialogue.

His remarks point to the difficult task filmmakers have in making movies that both video game fans and the broader public will enjoy.
A Creator’s Concern About Link’s Voice
Following a fan post about the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, art director Imamura (via X translation from Japanese) expressed concern that if Link starts speaking, it could diminish the cherished magic of the Zelda series for fans.
リンクが言葉を発した瞬間に、みんなが心の中で育ててきた“ゼルダの魔法”がふっと消えてしまわないか、それが少し心配。

Fans of the classic video game series point out that Link rarely speaks. While this lets players create their own interpretation of his character, it might make it harder for movie viewers to connect with him.
A fan on X pointed out that the game Breath of the Wild actually establishes Link can speak. Some believe he chooses silence to demonstrate his loyalty and inner strength. This established backstory could be something actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth considers when portraying the character.

Imamura admitted in his comments that Link will speak in the movie, but won’t be very talkative. He described the character as likely being quiet and reserved.
映画ではもちろん喋るでしょうけど寡黙なキャラクターになりそうですね。

The art director for the Zelda series responded to rumors about his reluctance to give Link a voice. He explained it’s not that he doesn’t want Link to speak at all, but he prefers Link remain mostly silent, maintaining his characteristic quietness. He added that the discussion around this topic was getting a bit out of hand.
喋ってほしくないというわけではなく、あまりペラペラ喋るのではなく、リンクらしい寡黙さは残してほしいという気持ちです。なんだか話が大きくなってきた😅

It’s still unknown how much dialogue Link will have in the upcoming movie. With a release date not until spring 2027, and no trailer currently announced, fans will have to be patient to find out.
Early Signs Point to a Faithful Adaptation
Recently released photos from the production seem to be pleasing many fans, indicating the adaptation is on the right track. New Zealand’s stunning scenery is serving as a convincing stand-in for the world of Hyrule, delivering the epic landscapes fans were hoping for. Fans online have also reacted positively to the first looks at Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Ainsworth as Link in their costumes.

As a big movie fan, I’ve been following the Legend of Zelda film, and it’s exciting to see Wes Ball – who directed the Maze Runner films and the recent Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – at the helm. It shows he knows how to handle a huge production! Everything I’ve seen so far suggests the team is really trying to honor the spirit of Zelda while making it work as a movie. And honestly, that’s the core of the challenge, isn’t it? How do you take this beloved story and update it for a modern audience without losing what makes Link, well, Link?
How much Link talks will be a big factor in how fans react to the movie. More importantly, the film needs to capture the special feeling – the “Zelda magic” – that fans love.
