Decisions like Spider-Man changing his history with Mary Jane, The Sentry wiping himself from existence, and Captain Marvel deciding to punish people before they committed crimes were all very controversial. These are some of the most difficult choices Marvel heroes have ever faced, not just because they tested what the heroes believed in, but because the consequences were incredibly grim.

After becoming the Sentry, Bob Reynolds quickly became one of the most popular and powerful heroes around. However, things changed with the arrival of the Void, a dangerous force that threatened the world. To protect everyone, Bob and his fellow heroes made the difficult decision to remove him – and all memory of him – from existence. With the help of Mister Fantastic and Doctor Strange, the Sentry essentially erased himself from everyone’s minds.

The choice only impacted Sentry personally. He returned to his life as Bob Reynolds until the Void resurfaced, bringing back his memories and forcing him to assemble a team for an approaching battle. Sentry willingly sacrificed his powers because the danger posed by the Void outweighed any potential benefit. This heartbreaking decision highlights just how destructive his other self could become.

The storyline Civil War II began with the emergence of Ulysses Cain, an Inhuman who could see into the future and identify potential criminals before they acted. Carol Danvers believed this ability was a vital tool for preventing crime and began detaining individuals based on Ulysses’ predictions. However, Tony Stark disagreed with this approach, leading to a conflict between them.

In the Civil War II storyline, Captain Marvel acted as the primary antagonist. Throughout the series, Carol Danvers repeatedly dismissed the opinions of her fellow heroes, firmly believing in the idea of stopping crimes before they happened. She was determined to prove her approach was right, even when it caused harm. Ultimately, her decisions led to tragic consequences for the superhero community, resulting in injuries to heroes like War Machine and She-Hulk, and even death.

The Hulk’s unpredictable outbursts were becoming a major problem, so Iron Man suggested a drastic solution to the Illuminati. He proposed launching the Hulk into space, sending him to a deserted planet to prevent further harm. Though Namor initially opposed the idea, the team ultimately agreed and managed to lure the Hulk onto a spaceship. This provided a temporary fix, but things didn’t go as planned – the ship didn’t reach its intended destination.

The survivors had their memories of this earlier team erased, and the truth remained hidden for decades.

Professor X essentially removed Petra, Sway, Darwin, and Vulcan from existence, attempting to conceal his own responsibility for past events and claiming he was protecting the remaining heroes from further suffering. While this plan seemed logical in theory, Charles made a significant error in execution that showed a lack of respect for everyone affected. Ultimately, it stands as one of Professor X’s most self-centered choices.

Once Krakoa became a recognized nation, Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, was put in charge of its intelligence agency, X-Force. However, the pressure of the job began to affect Beast’s sanity, leading him to make increasingly questionable choices, all supposedly for the good of Krakoa. When Wolverine challenged these decisions, Beast betrayed him, leading him into a deadly trap and killing him. He then brought Wolverine back to life, but as a brainwashed and obedient killer, using him as a personal weapon.

After Logan asked him again about what was happening, Beast’s actions spiraled out of control. He began cloning himself and ultimately led an army of Weapons of X. While Beast made several poor choices as he turned to villainy, betraying Logan like that was the final, unforgivable act. Given Wolverine’s history and fear of losing control, Beast crossed a dark line with this decision.

In the comic storyline Fatal Attractions, Magneto shockingly used his powers to remove the nearly indestructible Adamantium from Wolverine’s bones during a fight. Professor X, furious at this brutal attack, responded by using his mental powers to erase Magneto’s mind, leaving him unconscious. This instantly ended the battle, with the X-Men focusing on helping Wolverine, but it created major problems for the future.

When Professor X and Magneto attempted a mind-wipe on each other, their combined subconscious minds unexpectedly merged, creating a powerful new entity. This entity, fueled by Magneto’s anger and sadness, and Professor X’s hidden negative emotions, became Onslaught – a major threat to the X-Men. Accidentally creating Onslaught while trying to put Magneto into a coma is considered one of the most significant events in their history.

I remember when the Avengers vs. X-Men event went down – it was crazy! Cyclops honestly believed the Phoenix Force was the key to a better future for mutants, and he went all-in, even if it meant fighting the Avengers. It escalated into this massive superhero war, all because he thought it was necessary for mutant survival. The worst part? Right at the end, Professor X tried to talk him down, to reason with him, but Cyclops, completely consumed by the Phoenix, actually killed him. The whole superhero community was stunned – it was a seriously shocking moment.

It’s hard to say if Cyclops acted on impulse when he attacked Charles, as he did attempt to warn him several times beforehand. What’s clear is that this moment drastically changed Scott as a person. This dark act transformed him from a heroic figure into someone with a much more complicated and emotionally nuanced sense of right and wrong.

When Kingpin’s henchman shot Aunt May, Peter Parker faced an impossible choice. He made a deal with the demon Mephisto to save her life. However, Mephisto demanded a terrible price: Spider-Man had to erase his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. This effectively reset their relationship, undoing years of their established romance and upsetting many fans, as Peter and MJ’s love had been a key part of Spider-Man’s story for a long time.

Readers strongly disliked the storyline, and One More Day is often considered one of the weakest in Spider-Man’s history. However, the story is emotionally difficult because it forces Peter Parker to make an impossible choice. Essentially, Mephisto made him choose between Aunt May and Mary Jane Watson, and Peter ultimately saved Aunt May from disappearing forever.

Wanda Maximoff, having nearly destroyed the Avengers and created the alternate reality of House of M, lost control again after her twin brother was killed by Magneto. The Illuminati were a group that formed to tackle big problems facing superheroes and the world. During a crisis called “Time Runs Out,” they faced the potential end of the entire multiverse. They discovered the only way to save their own universe was to destroy others, and after careful consideration, they made the difficult decision to do just that.

Though comprised of heroes and those walking the line, the Illuminati faced a terrible choice: sacrificing innocent lives to save their world. They were hesitant, and ultimately only Namor took the drastic action deemed necessary. However, some argue this terrible act was what allowed Earth-616 to endure. Despite any potential justification, it remains one of the most shocking and morally reprehensible decisions ever made by a team of Marvel heroes, marking a moment where they abandoned their heroic principles in favor of sheer survival.
