Denis Villeneuve’s best thriller is on TV tonight

Denis Villeneuve is a highly acclaimed director in Hollywood, known for creating an impressive body of work including films such as Arrival, Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049, Dune, among others.

As a gaming enthusiast eagerly following the Oscar buzz, I can’t help but feel a thrill seeing Dune: Part Two racking up an impressive five nominations this weekend. Despite Villeneuve not making it to the Best Director list, his skill as a director is undeniably at its peak, leaving me excited for what he might create next in the gaming and cinematic worlds!

Tonight, as you’re getting ready for your Oscars marathon this Sunday, another captivating film by Villeneuve will be airing on television to celebrate the event!

The movie ‘Sicario’ will be shown tonight at 12:30 am, which is essentially Sunday morning, on BBC One. If you can’t catch it tonight, don’t worry, you have until four weeks from now to watch it on BBC iPlayer.

In easy terms, “Sicario” is considered Denis Villeneuve’s top-notch thriller by many, including us. This isn’t just our opinion – it’s his most critically praised thriller, as evidenced by its high rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a standout in the genre.

In fact, it’s Villeneuve’s best-rated movie only after Dune: Part Two and Arrival.

Featuring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin, the movie “Sicario” focuses on the journey of FBI agent Kate Macer, who is known for her ideals, as she teams up with a secretive, predominantly male government unit.

The team is pursuing a major drug lord, since the conflict along the U.S.-Mexico border has been escalating dangerously day by day.

This movie offers a powerfully gripping experience, boasting several standout sequences that have earned their place among the most iconic action scenes ever captured on film. For instance, the thrilling ambush at the border checkpoint is one such scene.

In 2015, Digital Spy bestowed a four-star rating on the movie, commending Roger Deakins’ exceptional cinematography for capturing landscapes that were both familiar and otherworldly, and lauding Benicio del Toro’s remarkable performance.

Intelligent enough to make you question your perspectives, but not overly intellectual to turn off ordinary viewers, the movie ‘Sicario’ is an incredibly captivating experience that impresses visually and resonates emotionally.

In 2018, a follow-up film named Sicario: Day of the Soldado was unveiled. This time around, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro returned to their roles (Emily Blunt, however, did not), while Stefano Sollima stepped in as the new director.

Denis Villeneuve did not participate in the making of this follow-up film, which received a mix of positive and negative opinions from critics, and was generally deemed inferior to its predecessor.

Tonight at 12:30 AM, the movie “Sicario” will be broadcast on BBC One. You can also stream it instantly on BBC iPlayer.
