White Lotus Star Reveals Filming in Thailand Was an Extreme Social Experiment

Actress Aimee Lou Wood, known for her role in White Lotus, has termed shooting the show in Thailand as quite intense, likening it to a real-life social experiment.

The thirty-year-old actress plays Chelsea, the youthful partner of Rick (portrayed by Walton Goggins). Instead of a typical couples’ getaway in Thailand, their journey conceals hidden intentions.

For a period of seven months, the cast resided and filmed their project at the Four Seasons resort in Koh Samui. During this time, they lived in the hotel rooms, whereas other guests were temporarily relocated.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my feelings about the behind-the-scenes tales from the making of our beloved movie. You see, Aimee, who barely had a moment’s rest due to her pivotal role, has recently spilled some beans about the “extreme circumstances” that surrounded the filming. In her own words, she wouldn’t call it a “fun” experience, and I can totally relate to that!

Talking to The Guardian regarding the intense filming of the third season, Amy expressed her astonishment, stating: “In a real sense, I found myself utterly amazed by what was unfolding. Here I am in Thailand, residing in a hotel that we also shoot in? It felt like an intriguing social experiment.

I’ll never forget that experience in my lifetime; it’s unique and unprecedented. I won’t relive anything similar to it again. The intensity was off the charts, making the enjoyable moments simply incredible and exceptionally memorable. The ocean and the surrounding scenery were breathtakingly majestic. Mike White [the director] is a true genius, and everyone involved in this project is incredibly talented. However, the circumstances under which we worked were exceptionally challenging.

In fact, Aimee found herself in a highly isolated situation since she was surrounded only by her crew, cast, and staff throughout the duration of the project. Unlike others who had the chance to return home whenever their schedules permitted, Aimee didn’t have that luxury.

Gillian Anderson, known for her role as the chatty Mancunian on Sex Education, shared that because of her key part in the show, she rarely found large stretches of time to travel back to England and have a break from the hectic lifestyle and work environment of staying at the hotel.

Indeed, Aimee found that those around her expressed worry about her health, with her friend and second-season co-star, Leo Woodall, frequently reaching out to inquire after her, as he understood the situation.

Aimee’s makeup artist, Miia Kovero, emphasized that she needed to leave because Aimee had immersed herself so deeply in her character that it was becoming challenging to distinguish between the actress and the role she was playing.

She said: “I told her, ‘It’s as if I’ve lost myself between Aimee and Chelsea.’ I had become so immersed in the characters that I couldn’t recognize my own identity anymore.

Viewers were left stunned as they watched the intense love scene between Chelsea and Rick in episode 2 of White Lotus‘s third season, which aired on Sunday evening.

In a provocative sequence, Aimee’s character, Chelsea, appeared without clothing while acting alongside her mature co-star, Walton Goggins.

Toward the closing moments of the episode, Chelsea and Rick spend some private time together, ultimately choosing to remove their clothes for an intimate moment.

The unusual duo’s bond has sparked interest among viewers, as many spectators have acknowledged the strong rapport between them.

Rick is an illusive American who is dating much younger Chelsea – a chatty Mancunian.

Fans reacted to the steamy sex scene as they penned on X after watching: ‘I AM ON THE FLOORRRRR.’,

‘I love Chelsea and Rick idc #TheWhiteLotus.’,

In this episode, I thought, ‘Ah, now I understand why they’re a couple.’ The connection between them feels authentic and well-balanced.

Recently, Aimee discussed that she and Walton collaborated with an expert on emotional intimacy to ensure the portrayal of the scene was accurate.

She explained to Elle, “We suggested that this particular event unfold as follows, and here’s why we believe it’s crucial. You rarely observe much affection between Rick and Chelsea otherwise.

To ensure that their physical and intimate moments radiate love, it’s essential to capture those tender moments accurately.

We don’t want it to be like a f***ing gratuitous [sex scene]. We wanted it to be very tender.’

The White Lotus Season 3 is released on HBO streaming service Max at 9pm ET / 6pm PT on Sunday.
