Gabrielle Union Reveals Heartbreaking Truth About Dwyane Wade’s Cancer Battle

Gabrielle Union shared publicly for the first time about the impact that Dwyane Wade’s cancer diagnosis had on him, on her, and their entire family.

Clearly, receiving that diagnosis was a deeply distressing experience for him, as it forces one to confront the reality of one’s mortality at such a young age, according to Union, who is 52 years old, during her appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends.

In December 2023, the 43-year-old ex-NBA athlete underwent an operation to take out a malignant growth in his kidney. As a result, medical professionals had to remove about four-tenths (or 40%) of his kidney.

However, you too may not fully grasp the strain such a journey places on relationships, marriages, families, and children, as the union pointed out on Wednesday.

In her remarks, the actress from Bring It On mentioned that the event had a small impact on Wade, making him slightly more cautious about sharing his ‘healing journey’ with those close to him.

Wade has kids: Zaire (22), Zaya (17) with his former wife Siovaughn Funches; Xavier (10) with ex-partner Aja Metoyer; and Kaavia (6) with Gabrielle Union.

In simpler terms, Union conveyed that given the significant procedure involving the partial removal of his kidney and subsequent recovery, it was crucial for those around him to accept and understand his vulnerability.

Beyond just accepting it, he had to embrace his own vulnerability. It took effort to show mercy and accept it in return.

Last month, during his podcast, Wade shared that it was a novel sight for his children to observe him appearing vulnerable or weak.

‘That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life,’ Wade said at the time. 

When I was alone, I found myself battling difficult times. A situation no man desires to encounter is showing vulnerability in front of his loved ones. Indeed, it’s challenging.

Dwyane shared that when he had been feeling uncomfortable in his stomach and noticed a decrease in the strength of his urine flow, he underwent a regular checkup. This examination revealed a tumor located on his right kidney by the doctors.

In simpler terms, Wade clarified, “He was questioning, ‘Why is my urine flow not strong and why is it weak?’

Upon sharing the results, I learned that a growth – either a cyst or a tumor – had been detected in one of my kidneys during a comprehensive body scan. The medical professionals then advised me that surgery was necessary for my condition.

He mentioned that he didn’t get a specific checkup for his kidneys, but since he had a comprehensive whole-body scan instead, they detected something.

Ever since I hung up my jersey in 2019 after a glorious NBA career, I’ve been remiss in making regular trips to the doctor for check-ups. It’s something I deeply regret and am now taking steps to rectify.

As an ardent fan, I found myself in a predicament of my own: a private choice to confront. If this growth, this unwelcome intruder on my kidney, turns out to be cancerous, well, at 41 years old, it seems prudent to opt for surgery. Such an aggressive entity must be excised swiftly to prevent its relentless spread.

He also added that he opted for the full-body exam after seeing his father undergo surgery.

When the doctors discovered a tumor, Dwyane stated that the growth was not suitable for a biopsy. To definitively determine if it was cancer, he declared his need for surgery, which he had in December 2023.

He added: ‘Thank God that I did do the surgery, right? Because the tumor was cancerous.’

Upon waking up from the operation, both Gabrielle and his father were present by his side. Grateful for their presence, the former athlete acknowledged his good fortune in having such a supportive and encouraging family.

‘I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me,’ Wade shared. 

During my period of vulnerability, I discovered resilience within my loved ones, my companions, and my community. Emerging from that experience, I’ve chosen to approach life in a new manner, with renewed vigor. I’m no longer idle; instead, I’m actively embracing each day.

Gabrielle and Dwyane have been married since 2014. 

The couple tied the knot at Chateau Artisan in Miami, Florida after a short eight-month engagement.
