Jeffrey Deitch recently unveiled a new exhibition by contemporary American artist Nina Chanel Abney. Entitled “Winging It“, the show delves into themes of spirituality, tenacity, and modern existence through her eclectic collection of pieces, encompassing vivid paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and an immersive installation.
The central attraction of this exhibit is a large-scale artwork inspired by reredos, consisting of a vibrant mural on vinyl and an illuminated neon sign portraying Jesus crafting a rainbow. Surrounded by signs made from letter boards, the artwork reinterprets religious imagery to be inclusive, providing uplifting messages and converting everyday phrases into spiritual affirmations.
The program offers insightful commentary on the commercialization of faith, at the same time appreciating adaptability and wit. It delves into how individuals create significance amidst a reality where conventional systems frequently fail. Abney skillfully combines religious symbols from the past with contemporary themes, making mass-produced items resonate as cultural landmarks that mirror our quest for comfort in a broken world.
By means of her vibrant creations, Abney encourages onlookers to accept flaws and imagine spirituality as a flexible, individual journey, praising the pursuit of significance and resilience amidst an uncertain universe.
Nina Chanel Abney’s Winging It will be on view at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles until April 26, 2025.
