Sherwood star joins BBC’s “gripping” murder mystery for new season ‘brimming with twists and turns’

Christine Bottomley, known for her work on Sherwood, is joining the cast of the popular BBC crime drama Shetland for its new season. Season 11 is currently being filmed, with Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell reprising their roles as DI Ruth Calder and DI Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh.

The new season of this crime drama, shot across Scotland and on the Shetland Islands, will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later in the year.

According to Gaynor Holmes, a commissioning editor at the BBC, the new season of Shetland will be full of surprising plot twists and emotionally powerful moments that are sure to keep audiences engaged.

Paul Logue delivers another captivating and immersive story, beautifully set against the rugged landscape of the Shetland Islands.

Okay, so I’m really excited for the new season! It’s not just Bottomley who’s joining the show as a fresh face. We’ve also got Kevin Harvey – you might recognize him from This City Is Ours – plus Stella Gonet, who was great in The Crown, Gavin Mitchell from Crime, and Gregor Fisher, who I remember from Only Child. Lots of new people to get to know!

The show also features guest appearances by Robin Weaver (known for Rivals), Daniel Boyd (House of the Dragon), John McLarnon (I Swear), Charlene Boyd (Department Q), John Wark (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Jude Bain (Let It Come Down), Beth Marshall (The Bombing of Pan Am 103), and Helen Mackay, who previously appeared in Shetland.

The new six-part BBC series, inspired by the novels of Ann Cleeves, focuses on a decades-old murder and how it impacts people in the present day.

The show’s storyline centers around a disturbing discovery: the skeleton of an unidentified man found in the trunk of a car recovered from the water. The investigation starts with trying to find out who owned the car – a well-known doctor who mysteriously left the islands nine years prior, surrounded by unsettling rumors.

As Calder and Tosh investigate the GP’s thoughts and the impact on those he left behind, their search for the truth leads them into increasingly risky and unsettling situations.

The eleventh season will feature the return of several familiar faces, including Lewis Howden as Billy McCabe, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson, Samuel Anderson as Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake, Steven Miller as Rev Alan Calder, Angus Miller as Donnie, Tosh’s partner, Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant, Anne Kidd as pathologist Cora McLean, and Eubha Akilade as PC Lorna Burns.

Shetland will return to the BBC later this year.
