The planned The Lord of the Rings Gollum movie has received a disappointing update.
In the upcoming prequel movie slated for a 2026 release, the actor who brought both the on-set motion capture and memorable voice for Gollum/Sméagol will reprise his role once again.
However, during a panel at Fan Expo Vancouver 2025 (as reported by The Direct), Serkis disclosed that the release of the movie, named The Hunt for Gollum, has been postponed.
He mentioned that the release date has changed, and it will now be in December 2027, not December 2026 as initially planned.

Our writing journey has just started. Later in this year, we’ll be getting ready for production. This preparation phase can take anywhere from six to seven months. Following this, filming will commence the next year. Therefore, you can expect the release in December 2027.
This movie is the second in a fresh series of “The Lord of the Rings” films, following last year’s animated “The War of the Rohirrim,” which garnered varying reviews. Additionally, another live-action film, as yet unnamed, is also being developed.

In the next two movies coming up, it’s been indicated that Gandalf will make an appearance. However, Sir Ian McKellen, who plays this character, has only hinted that those in charge would like him to continue in the role; he hasn’t explicitly said whether he will or not.
As a devoted fan, I’d be more than eager to slip back into the elven cloak of Legolas if Peter Jackson extends the invitation. After all, it was under his guidance that my journey in Hollywood commenced. Frankly, I’m unaware of their plans, but if he tells me to jump, I’ll ask him how high!
I had a conversation with Andy [Serkis] recently, and he mentioned they’ve been pondering over some strategies. When I asked him how it could possibly be done, he responded, “Through AI,” which made perfect sense to me.
