The Hunger Games confirms “dangerous” and “immersive” new adaptation will open later this year

This year, the groundbreaking live stage version of “The Hunger Games“, described as both immersive and perilous, is set to debut.

Beginning on Monday, October 20, live adaptations of “The Hunger Games: On Stage,” inspired by Suzanne Collins’ esteemed book collection and blockbuster movie series, will make their debut at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre.

Tickets for the performances will go on sale at 1pm on Thursday, March 27.

The performance is being reimagined by the renowned playwright, Conor McPherson, and will be directed by the talented Matthew Dunster, who has previously worked on “The Pillowman” and “2:22 A Ghost Story”.

Set within the original narrative of ‘The Hunger Games,’ this captivating story unfolds the tale of bravery, resistance, and indomitable human spirit. It follows our fearless protagonist Katniss Everdeen on her voyage of self-exploration, transforming into a symbol of rebellion and inspiration.

Collins said she was “thrilled” her beloved franchise was in the hands of McPherson and Dunster.

In her statement, she noted that Conor’s exceptional transformation of the script stands out as something distinct, and Matthew’s captivating, vibrant direction offers viewers an entirely novel perspective on the narrative.

Dunster confirmed that McPherson had crafted a “tense and risky production,” much like the masterpieces he’s globally recognized for.

The intricacy and intensity found in the book and movie have been skillfully transferred by Conor McPherson, resulting in a tense and potentially perilous play that reflects his signature style,” he remarked.

“He honours the young voice of Katniss Everdeen and puts her front and centre.

We’ve been refining our play for more than a year now, under the guidance of our exceptional creative team, to ensure our theatrical expression resonates powerfully and daringly, similar to Suzanne Collins’ novel and the movie’s intensity. However, we plan to put our unique spin on it, presenting it in the realm of live theater.

“We want our Hunger Games to be uniquely, thrillingly theatrical.”

McPherson shared insights about the sources of his stage adaptation, saying: “Being a father of a teenager, I find immense fulfillment in shaping a tale that resonates with today’s youth through its themes of determination and moral bravery during these challenging periods.

We are dedicated to accurately adapt Suzanne Collins’ work into a stage production that retains the same exhilaration found in its written form.

It’s been a delightful experience witnessing the development of this show’s expressive style during energetic rehearsals led by the collaborative efforts of director Matthew Dunster, choreographer Charlotte Broom, and their dedicated ensemble of talented youth.

Announcing that Suzanne Collins’ next book in the Hunger Games series, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” is set to hit shelves on March 18th.

The upcoming novel will soon be transformed into a movie by Lionsgate, scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
