Netflix’s heart-wrenching Toxic Town is Jodie Whittaker’s best show since Broadchurch

Fundamentally, Netflix’s Toxic Town revolves around the unyielding determination of a mother to fight for her child.

Drawing inspiration from an incredible real-life event, this four-part series is set in the late ’80s and ’90s of the town of Corby, East Midlands. As a gamer, I can’t deny that Whittaker has always been a formidable talent in the acting world. Yet, it’s her portrayal of this tough-as-nails matriarch that truly steals the show. Her strength and determination leap off the screen, making every scene feel intense and real.

In a sense similar to her role in ITV’s acclaimed drama “Broadchurch,” widely regarded as one of the finest British dramas from the past two decades, she portrayed Beth Latimer, a grieving mother. Although the plot was distinct, it was another occasion where Whittaker’s life-like performance infused her character deeply into the series.

Alongside the remarkable acting skills showcased in “Toxic Town,” the script was penned by BAFTA-winning author Jack Thorne, known for skillfully addressing heavy themes with subtlety, depth, and sensitivity.

In a simpler and more conversational style: Thorne’s 2023 BBC drama titled “Best Interests” featured Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan. The story revolved around a couple who were torn between an unimaginable choice concerning their daughter, who was critically ill. Similarly, the narrative of “Toxic Town” revolves around a compelling blend of profound hope and unavoidable sorrow, focusing on its residents.

The tale is made powerful by the bravery, faith, and emotion displayed by the actual mothers, whose stories served as inspiration – and the performers who translated them onto screens – which truly resonates with audiences.
