LoL confirmed for Asian Games 2026: Will Faker lead South Korea to another gold medal?
In the Asian Games 2026 held in Aichi-Nagoya, League of Legends (LoL) is set to compete, boasting top-tier players such as Faker who might represent South Korea in an attempt to retain the gold medal.
2026’s Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya will officially include League of Legends (LoL) among its 11 selected video game titles. The complete Asian Games are scheduled from September 19th to October 4th, 2026; however, the specific schedule for the esports event has not been disclosed yet.
At the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, esports made its debut as a demonstration sport and was later upgraded to a full medal event at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. League of Legends (LoL) was showcased in both years, with China taking the top spot in 2018 and South Korea winning gold in 2023.
Faker’s potential second gold medal
If Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, South Korea’s most decorated League of Legends player, gets picked for the national team again, he would create history. At present, he is one of only two players who have been selected for back-to-back Asian Games, with Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk being the other one.
Initially, Faker teamed up with Kim “Kiin”, Han “Peanut”, Go “Score”, Park “Ruler”, and Jo “CoreJJ” in 2018, representing South Korea. Regrettably, they didn’t clinch first position as they suffered a defeat against China during the finals.
2023 saw Faker rejoin the national team and significantly contribute to South Korea’s historic first LoL gold medal win at the Asian Games. Playing alongside Choi “Zeus” Woo-je, Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk, and Ryu “Keria” Min-seok, the South Korean team triumphed over China in the semifinals before clinching victory against Chinese Taipei in the final match.
Speculation is rising as League of Legends (LoL) gets officially confirmed for the 2026 Asian Games. There’s talk about whether Faker will make a comeback to the national team and vie for his second gold medal. His expertise and leadership skills certainly make him an invaluable member, but South Korea is brimming with promising young mid-laners like Chovy and Zeka, who are equally deserving of a place on the team.
Nevertheless, Faker’s significant impact on South Korean esports is well-acknowledged, increasing the likelihood of his reselection. In recent times, he has further cemented his status, being the first to be inducted into the Hall of Legends in 2024, clinching his fifth World Championship that year, and earning the Finals MVP accolade.
Besides his success in esports, Faker has additionally garnered significant national acclaim. South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol lauded him as one of the country’s most exceptional young talents, grouping him with international stars like K-pop acts BTS and BLACKPINK, soccer player Son Heung-min, and baseball player Kim Ha-Seong.
