Star of anticipated ’80s reboot says David Tennant had “too much baggage” to join cast
Philip Glenister has explained why David Tennant wasn’t cast in the Bergerac reboot.
In a buzz of speculation, it was whispered that the actor known from “Doctor Who” and “Rivals” might take on the lead detective role in U&Drama’s reboot of the ’80s show; however, it was ultimately Damien Molony, star of both “Brassic” and “Being Human”, who was confirmed for the part.
Glenister, the actor portraying affluent entrepreneur Arthur Wakefield, recently expressed to Radio Times his belief that Tennant’s past commitments or connections might be too substantial for him to become part of the cast.
He mentioned that casting an actor such as David Tennant in a remake might pose challenges because it could be tough to live up to the original series with such a well-known actor.
I believe it complicates the production process since when presenting Doctor Who as a character portraying Jim Bergerac, there seems to be an excessive amount of background associated with him, making it challenging to avoid potential complications or distractions.
Glenister stated that Moloney seems an ideal choice due to his extensive television acting background, yet without being firmly associated with a single significant role.
Though I haven’t had the chance to meet Damian personally, he’s well-known to me due to his role in Brassic. However, many people are only recently familiar with him in this context,” Glenister added on.
He has been quietly working his way up, staying below the spotlight yet ready to shine brightly. He was an actor who seemed destined for success due to his exceptional talent, and with each step forward, you found yourself thinking, “This could be the breakout star.
The actor commented, ‘I believe it was a wise choice to select someone recognizable yet not overly famous. However, I suspect his fame will grow significantly from hereon.’
I’m thrilled to share that starting from February 27, I’ll be able to dive back into the world of Bergerac as the reboot premieres on U&Drama! Even better, I can catch all episodes streaming conveniently on their service, U.
