Iconic detective once portrayed in ’80s BBC series is returning to screens, it’s been confirmed

It appears that Miss Marple is slated for a comeback on screen, as suggested by the great-grandson of Agatha Christie, the original author.

The well-known detective is a cherished creation of the crime author, with numerous performers having brought the character to life over time. Among them are Joan Hickson, who portrayed the detective in the 1980s BBC television series, as well as Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie on ITV at later points.

In advance of the upcoming BBC Christie adaptation “Towards Zero,” it’s been disclosed by James Pritchard that a fresh take on one of the characters is being developed.

As I shared with the Radio Times, my enthusiasm is beyond measure! I’ve been eagerly pursuing a new venture centered around Miss Marple for quite some time now. It’s true that Poirot has captivated the spotlight since the dawn of time, but I can’t wait to shine it on the remarkable Miss Marple too!

Five years ago, he reread all the Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple stories and realized just how great they are that he had initially overlooked. He went on to express his opinion that the character of Miss Marple is undervalued.

Pritchard subsequently commended Christie for penning numerous bold female characters throughout her writing journey. He further mentioned that his great-grandmother was intriguingly complex, as she combined qualities of quiet reserve with assertiveness.

He stated that although she didn’t label herself as a feminist, she firmly believed in her own power, matching or even surpassing any men she encountered. That’s the type of woman she portrayed in her writing.

Discussing the novel “Towards Zero“, where a murder occurs on an estate, Pritchard noted the adaptation was “somewhat less somber” and hinted at potential future projects with a similar lighter tone.

Next month, the upcoming BBC series is set to premiere, featuring Oliver Jackson Cohen, Ella Lily Hyland, Mimi Keene, and Anjelica Huston as its main stars.

Towards Zero premieres on BBC iPlayer on Sunday, March 2 from 6am, and airs on BBC One at 9pm.
